Trolling Motor experiences

I have spoken to Johnny and plan to purchase a new 24 volt trolling motor from him soon. I am looking to hear suggestions and experiences with motorguide and Mk. I need at least 70lb or larger thrust. As of now I am leaning toward the mg tour edition. Any input welcome.

Personally-I've owned 4 Motorguides (all new) and had problems with every one. From footswitches to seals leaking into the motor-one circuit board went bad and even the pivot pin housing breaking on the foot pedal.
Out of the same number of Minn Kotas I had one problem with a used one I bought.
That's my 3 cents worth.

I prefer Motorguide myself. Never had problems and I only changed one out because I upgraded.

I've owed all sorts now. I love The minn Kota Fortrex, but didn't care for the Maxxum at all ( too heavy), but I had an older model. I've owned two Motor Guides. Not sure which one I had before ( it wasn't the digital), but I liked it pretty well. My new boat came with the Motorguide X3 and I like it fine too. I've never had issues out of any trolling motor I've owned. My preference is the one that is the quietest. That would be a Fortrex IMO, but I can't afford one right now. But go with the one you like the most. This again just the Ford / Chevy debate all over again.

I have a Minn Kota Maxxum 80lb i really like. Its an upgrade from a Minn Kota Edge 65lb which got the job done. So Minn Kota gets my vote.

Minn Kota Fortrex is a great trolling motor. Only experiences I've had with Motorguide were enough I'd never own one

I've had both. Old boat had mg and new to me boat has MK. No real issues with either, may be a ford and chevy type deal. If I had to lean one way, would probably prefer the MK over the mg. MK seems a little better built. Either beats a paddle!!!!!!!

I had a 2001 Triton 20PDC that had a MG on it when I bought it new. The MG broke down on me 3 times on the water in the first 6 months I had it. I sold it and bought a Minnkota. I never had another problem and had the boat 7 more years. My present boat has a Minnkota, so you know what my feelings are.

OMC trolling motors were like tanks and now there is no OMC , why , because MK owns them and now you know the rest of the story emoGeezer emoUSA

I have one of the first MinnKota Fortrex trolling motors. If you told me I could only keep one thing off of my current boat it would be my Fortrex. It goes through matted grass like it isn't there and it is a lot quieter than any Motorguide I have used. It is a little heavy but the lift assist works great and it take almost no effort to raise the motor to the store position. Like I said it is on my Bullet and it doesn't cause any problem with the extra weight. I do have mine mounted TN style instead of across the nose of the boat.

Let me tell you...... I have a few motorguides and my main one was the tour digital 82. Awesome trolling motor when it runs correctly. My first issue was that it would just take off on high out of no where. I took it to Johnny and when I walked in I noticed 5 other of the exact same trolling motor. lol I knew then I was in for it and I was! The module went bad three different times and we realized it must be leaking somewhere and who knows where! The last time it started doing it, it took off on high and threw me in the water back in the fall and I broke my duckett rod in half. It has been a very expensive road. Those modules are pricey! If it would just work correctly it's awesome! Big if for me though! If you do get a motorguide I would recomend buying the fred rumbandis shocks to help assist it like the fortrex. Haven't used the fortrex but all I hear are great things!

I had a MG on my last boat, and a Maxxum Pro on my current boat. I haven't had any problems with either one. I lean toward the Minn Kota, I like the universal sonar feature, vs. mounting a puck and wire routing.

Thanks for all the info. Keep it coming. My opinion is changing daily so I have not made a purchase yet. They are too expensive to make a mistake

I bought the motorguide FW 75 a couple of years ago. I wanted to save a little money so I did not purchase the digital tour edition. My father in law has a digital tour edition and I wished I would have just spent the extra money. I had to have the steering cable replaced on this unit when it was less than a year old. But I will say that it was covered under warranty. If I were to purchase another trolling motor it would probably be a Minn Kota.
