The Motor Issues Saga Continues...

Well, it all started with the gear case blow out about 2 weeks ago, I just knew it was my motor with a new ventilation hole in the block. Well dodged that bullet, I was happy about that. I put her in the driveway, pulled out the plugs to check for broken connecting rods, all pistons moved as they should. Phew! Then I put things back together and she fired up... emoScratch Then I put her in gear and with a loud POP! That's when I decided it was a gear case issue. So I asked around and James said call Eddie. Eddie hooked me up with a brand new gear case, Happy Camper. Well then I get things all back together and off to the lake I go for some breakin time on my new gear case and what happens? She won't start. So after about an hour of trying to get her fired off, It's 11 pm at this time, I pack it in and take her home. :emoticon: The next morning off I go again I just figured she was flooded as happens on occasion. So after about half an hour I called James, he gave me a few pointers on starting the ol girl, nothing I did seemed to work. So FRUSTRATED beyond belief, she has always been a little hard to start but has never failed to start and once she fires up she starts right up afterwards. So, on the way home I dropped her off at Sportsman's Marine, this is about 10:30am. They tried a few things there on the lot to no avail. So I decided to leave her there for them to look into the issue. After all they are supposed to be the professionals right? I stopped there because I called Joey earlier that morning and he was covered for the week he said. I told you all that to tell you this, It's been 4 days and no updates from them. I drove by there on the way to work and she is still sitting in the spot where I left her. Out in the rain and the sun. emoMad I am very tempted to go pick her up Monday and give Joey a shot at it, which is what I wanted to happen in the first place, never make decisions when you are angry. I just want to go fishing Wednesday and Thursday when I'm off, is that too much for a fella to want?

It's that a bad thing? I didn't want to burden wrenchn2 with it. He it's already overloaded.

go get it and do a few test yourself , then you will know what you are looking at. compression test should be first thing on your list. if that Is within spec then work off that. there is a world of knowledge on this site for us all to use . I would guess as to why it started in driveway and not at the lake is the back pressure from It being in the water that's why I say do a compression test

I use a home made cup made from some plumbing items that I attach to the prop, it effectively creates back pressure and muffles the exhaust to an extent. Probably not the same as being in the water but I'm guessing better than none at all. I will do a compression test, but would rather let Wrechin2 do a leak down test, that is more telling of the condition of the power head

Mr. S I may have talked to you yesterday...not sure??... & honestly I don't remember telling you last week that I was too busy to work on it....I'm never too busy to work on a Stratos...ha ha!!..(that is unless it was on a Thur or a Fri when you called)..I'm usually trying to wrap up all the boats that I've promised for the weekend on those days... I'm probably more familiar with that engine than any..& I promise I can give you a pretty quick answer at least on why it is not firing.... 706-891-9921.. let me know..thanks.

No problem Joey, And yes it was me that called you, I am also the one that bought the trolling motor tension cable from you earlier in the season for a BFL4K Evinrude. I realize yall engine Doctors are busy this time of year. I get impatient sometimes and being upset about not knowing what to do my self didn't make things any better, I'm kinda self reliant like that. But on a better note... Before work this evening I decided to try to get her fired up and low and behold she fired up with a little effort. emoDance emoScratch So I believe my ignition system is ok, I'm going to check the starter RPM's tomorrow when I take my tach home from work. I'm also going to check to see if I have any enrichment valve (choke) blockages, it's almost like some of the cylinders are getting fuel and some are not from a cold start. The enrichment valve (choke) could not be opening and or a blockage somewhere along the way in the tubing or in the intake manifold. We will see. Oh yea going to check compression just for information purposes now that I know what the readings are supposed to be.

Ok, working thru my what seems like a laundry list of things that's needs attention. I have been working on the break in of my new gear case, 2.5 hours in so far, I am not quite satisfied with the way the boat planes out, or should I say it's struggle to get up on plane, I'm not sure if, at a prop guys suggestion, if the issue is due to me lowering my Jack plate a 1/2" to put my prop shaft at 3.5" below the transom or if it's something with the new gear case. I have known since I bought the boat that the prop on it wasn't the right one, OMC Shooter II. When I'm coming out of the hole, it's like the prop just looses grip on the water at about 4300, once it does this I have to ease out of it and once it's regains it's traction I ease back on the gas. Before the adjustments and new gear case it w would not lose traction until about 5000. Any suggestions other than the obvious, putting my plate height back where it was.

your describing prop blow out , make sure you have the weed ring behind the prop. after lower rebuild you may have forgot to put it back on . the shooter and the renegade require it or they blow out

I was un aware it was required, I know there is such a thing it didn't have one on it, I guess I'll get one then. Thanks for the info.
