I have a couple problems with my motor. My water pressure is only 8 psi at wot. Can't run it long like that it want to get hot I think starts running bad. I have installed new water pump and housing Also new thermostats and pressure relief valves. Motor is not to high. I have even tryed running it as low as it will go. Did not change anything. Motor was so low exhaust ports was under water idling. Idk what else to do on it. At idle it is running normal pressure. 2 to 4 psi. My next problem is between 1700 and 2000 rpms my tach quits. Once my rpms drop below it starts to work again. Any help welcomed.

You probably have one of two things either a blown powerhead gasket or exhaust cover gasket but I am thinking powerhead gasket

Powerhead gasket. Are you talking about where it mounts to the midsection. If so it is new. And tach problem I have tryed 2 different tachs with same results.

the reason it start running bad and tack quits is the rectifier is getting hot , its cooled by water flow. pull the rectifier and see what underside looks like, it may be already melted and restricting your flow . just a thought

The only time it runs bad is wot after a few minutes with only 8 psi. If I keep boat around 48mph it runs like a champ.

Ok on my tach it quit working completely. So I read that you can hook it up to the yellow and gray wire. Tach started working again. Then I raised the rpms it got to 1650 and tach quit again. So is it the rectifier or the stator. I am at a lose. Not sure what to do. I did notice I have a loose magnet in my flywheel. Going to fix it tomorrow. Any help will be appreciated.

When I hooked the gray wire to the yellow and gray I did not take the rectifier wire out of it. Could that be what it making it quit.

Ok got tach working. Stator and rectifier was both bad. Now to the water pressure problem.

Is you may have a blockage. Or a missing part. Did this low water pressure start after the new powerhead gasket was done?

No. It was same before it also. Had multiple problems. This is hopefully the last one. The reason it was changed is it was leaking. Had oil residue leaking down the midsection. When I changed the rectifier I looked thur the hole where it mounts. All looked good inside there.

Is the tube that sits on the lower unit broken?

No. It was not last 2 times I had it off. First time I took it off was to replace water pump. I got the kit with housing and all replaced it. Then pulled it back lose just to be sure keyway and impeller was right. It was.

Sounds like this will require a mechanic. Everthing through the system will need to be checked you have a blockage or a crack thats reducing psi. By vhance have you tried another water psi gauge and hose to be sure yours is working properly.

You have some kind of blockage or crack that changing pressure between the water intake and the psi gauge hookup. You may be able to flush the motor backwards and get it out if its wood or something.
When i took my 1985 johnson 150 apart it had a pebble between the mid and motor in the water exit path. This had been giving me a good 40 psi and may have lead to a rectifier melt down.

I would pull the block off then pull the stats and regulator off and start backflushing with a good strong water hose. Then do the uptake tube to the lower. Watching for any debri to come loose.
