I need your help guys. I currently have a Lowrance HDS7 Gen1 with structure scan. I am looking to upgrade to the HDS9 Gen3. Does anyone know if I can put the 9 in the 7's place and everything be compatible?

It seems like it SHOULD work but the big question is, will it? Let me know if I can answer any questions to better explain my current setup. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes
You will limit some of the 9's features but it will do everything the 7 did and more
Side scan will work, you can decide whether to remove the side scan box or not. There are arguments for both
What you will loose is the Chirp feature and the functions that use of some of the newer transducer will give you
such as total scan

Awesome, I appreciate your response. I am wondering now if it is worth it to upgrade and hook it up to the old equipment.

It is
Or at least I think it is
You will have 2 years of warranty
You will have updates
And you can always update the transducers later
I believe it is worth it just for the total scan alone
It is much easier to mount a total scan to a trolling motor
Trolling motor transducers are usually the easiest to change

I just completed this process going from a Gen 1 HDS8 to Gen 3 HDS9. Everything from the old HDS will work with the new one. However, I used the new transducer for the Gen 3, it gives you better resolution due to the CHIRP transducer.

You can sell the LSS-1 and transducer pretty easily, ours was gone within a couple of days. Lots of people are interested in the cheaper option to update.

If you are looking to sell the LSS-1 and module, I am certainly interested.

To make sure I have this correct, structure scan on Gen3 models are nothing more that the SS transducer plugged into the sonar unit correct?

Correct

Although a lot has been written about the results of plugging an Lss-2 into the LSS-1 box and using it like that
It is supposed to give clearer results
I had planned to try this but ended up trading boats

BTW I am more than satisfied with the results of my Lss-2 plugged directly into my Gen 2 9 Touches

A "TotalScan" transducer is used with the newer Gen 3 units. It does the CHIRP Downscan and SideScan in one transducer. It is slightly bigger than the old SideScan transducer. But to answer your question, it plugs straight into the Gen 3 unit, no LSS module is required.

I believe the gen 3 has wifi but the gen 1 does not. but If you plan to use both units in the boat (recommended), you can still use the NEMA 2000 starter kit to hardwire the 2 units together so they can share info and files.

You have several options since you already have a LSS-1 and SS box. The easiest and less expensive way would be to just swap the 7 and 9 out...simply remove the HDS 7 head unit and gimbal mount and replace it with the HDS 9 hardware. You can order the HDS 9 with several different add ons. If it were me and the LSS-1 was still in good working condition, I would keep it and use it.

The downside to that is you wont be able to utilize the chirp technology in the HDS 9 because it requires a different transducer. I personally do not like the Total Scan transducer, the idea of having 3 elements in one transducer is great in theory until one of them fails. The second issue with the TotalScan is it has to be mounted where it has contact with the waters surface when the boat is on pad running for the 2d element to read depth and bottom contours. Thats an accident waiting to happen, and could be a very expensive one at that.

The best thing to do would be contact the person or place you plan on purchasing the unit from and discuss it with them. The options are pretty much endless on how to set it up but it needs to fit the way you fish.
