Net in Harrison Bay

Yesterday when coming back in to the ramp I apparently ran through a large line net just outside the pocket of where Harrison Bay ramp is located. This thing is not marked. I felt a slip in what felt like my prop and shut it down immediately to see if I hit something, but I was running in like nearly twenty feet of water. Stopped and looked around and seen the net with a small green colored float on the end. There is no way of seeing this net with any type of chop on the water, which was the case yesterday afternoon. I trimmed up and didn't see anything wrapped around my prop, but I got concerned when I got back up on plane and got up round 40 mph I felt another small slip. Just be aware of this net and I really hope that my motor is not damaged in any way. I come here about five or six times a year. I didn't realize that people could do this- particularly in a high traffic area of the lake.

Sorry to hear this. I would pull the prop off and check behind it just to make sure there was no line tangled on the prop shaft.

Its illegal to stretch a net all the way across that bay if I am not mistaken. TWRA needs to be called.

Justin they leave just a very small area and then not 30 yards in from that one they will stretch another one across from the opposite bank so the fish have to swim an obstacle course or be caught in it they had 6 nets like this at the mouth of the park not long ago

Check your prop hub. May have spun it

This Time of year across places like that they will kill so many bass trying to move up

I think some of them are targeting bass tbh. Looking for that next state record. If I get one in my prop while running in a main channel I can promise you it won't be there anymore.

It wouldn't be a state record by rod and reel. I don't think they want bass. Bass don't put money in their pocket and neither is a state record. If they got recognition for a state record, that means more fisherman and more hate towards gill netting</p>

I took these pics yesterday. This net runs from the first slough on the left as you leave HBSP and curves around and stretches all the way down the main lake bank. If it's one net it's like...200 yards ! It was gone for awhile when the water was way down but since the water is back up a little it's in that same area. He must be doing well there. I can't imagine how many bass are being caught in it because that's where I was catching quite a few bass when the water was up and muddy. Oops...did I say that ? emoSmile

I pulled the prop and there is no line or material on the spline shaft. Planning on marking my prop and making a run here locally to see if it slips again. I see from youtube that if the outer line breaks from the inner hub line then it is the prop hub. I tried to let some people at the bridge and the ramp know about the net. I don't mind calling TWR if I can get a number.

The farthest end out was closer to the red creek channel marker buoy yesterday.

That was probably another net. I took these pics around 4:30 yesterday. One end was in the slough and it stretched very close down the main lake bank to the same spot as the other day in about 8 feet of water. It's possible he's got a few nets connected and has them going out in all directions though. emoScratch

as you can see in the pic. he has properly put his name and number on it, so if you have incurred damage to your boat/ motor. call TWRA and let them know about so they can inform him he is responsible for the repair. I trap, and I am very careful how I do it because state law says I am responsible for any damage or harm I bring to anyone's domestic pets or livestock. they should take the same type of precautions I do to prevent that...

I have asked this before but no answer... what kind of fish are being targeted with a gill net? All of them? What do you do with them? Is there a local fish market that buys them?

Paddlefish for their "roe". A 40 pound paddlefish can yield 10 pounds of caviar.
Catfish
Buffalo ( the fish )

Blue, they are local commercial fishermen trying to feed their family, catfish are bringing on average 8-10.00 per lb. right now at fish markets. The catfish are following the shad into the sloughs right now so they use gill nets or trot line to catch them. We caught 33 catfish in booker t last weekend most blue cats and one 36.3 lbs we were trying to catch crappie in the slough

TWRA isn't going to do anything. I'm tired of reporting and calling. These catfishing guys have the Feds bought off where they can make Thousands of dollars off the Roe to sell to Russia. TWRA's hands are tied.

I hit one near grasshopper while running in the middle of the channel in 30+ foot of water. I was about 75 yards from the bank, where there was a small yellow buoy which was the only visible marking (that I only saw after I hit it) I could see for the net. The net was stretched from one end of the channel to the other. I got in contact with two different TWRA agents and was told by both there was nothing that could be done. They said there was not law stating where they can or can't string their nets. One of them told me that they are supposed to run them deep enough to where boats can safely pass over them, but there was nothing that they could do about it. Cost me a new water pump, but I probably destroyed a 50 yards of his net cutting it out of the prop so I guess we got even.
