Whopper Ploppers & Other Topwaters

So I was fishing with someone who killed it with this lure. Unfortunately, I tried running a Chattterbait most of the morning and switched to a Hula Popper late in the game (got a hit but didn’t boat one). I went and looked at the WP’s in the store and jumping Jehoshaphat, they are expensive! In your opinion, are they worth it? What’s your most productive topwater? I haven’t fished much topwater but have had a little luck with a Spook. By friend mentioned that WPs and Spooks allow you to cover more water than things like PoppRs. Thoughts?

I bought a couple in the past few weeks. Ha ent thrown them a lot yet as my fish have been coming mainly on t rigged worms but, they are the easiest top water lure I’ve used. Looking forward to using it more

If you get on Dick's email list they periodically do flash fishing sales on them Where they are buy 3 get one free or buy one get one half price. The sale is usually just for that day so you have to watch for the emails. They have some good deals on crank baits at times also. I have been able to get lucky Craft and other Dual Core for $5 a piece by buying 5 or more. I don't like there stand on NRA recently though may stop buying from them.

That’s helpful, junebugwapiti! So, you think it IS a more effective topwater than a Spook or other fast moving topwater?

like any other bait, it has its place. not a be-all top water. just another option. I've used one for about 2 years now. the strikes on it are violent but not any more so than strikes on a spook, buzzbait, or popper. they do allow you to cover a lot of water in a hurry.

I wouldn't spend $15 on 1 bait either, but I have a Plopper. It was hung in a tree 1 inch away from a a frog pattern jitterbug. Both looked brand new. I've fished it, but no fish yet.

They are a great bait because you can fish it slow or pause it and it still mimics a buzz bait. Generally, they work best for me at post spawn when bass are schooling. Otherwise I don't really get bit well on them. Guess I don't have the patients to stick with it. Some guys swear by them in winter.

I hadn’t checked Academy yet. I watched Dr Detroit just kill it with one and I was pretty impressed.

I haven't bought a WP yet but since they are so popular now I did find my old box of Woodchoppers to try instead. They were killers back in the 70's so maybe.......

They are pricey. But I bought two when they first came out and throw them very often. I like them a lot and like silvertalon said you can pause them, pull them, or just a steady reel and they will destroy them. My opinion is they are worth it!

The Whopper ploppers catch fish and so do lucky craft pointers . I know they are expensive but you should be able to fish with one for several years long as you tie good knot with good line, because your not going to lose it getting hung up unless you throw it in top of tree. Twenty pound braid works great on either one of these.

waterchap, you cant go wrong with a whopper plopper The first day I bought mine , I caught a 9lber from the dock in cff and this can be verified by one of the guides that watched me wrestle her in then i walked around banks and caught 5 more the same morning , so, spend the bucks and have a ball. by the way , My preference in color is the black loon #90 or 110 either and i def. recommend you using a swivel these things will absolutely destroy your line by twisting it. Like all the above sayings, you can cover a lot of water with them, pause them, etc. I havent tried the bass pro version , so cant say about it. Was worth the money to me !!!

The 110 is perfect and we have been killing them on these wolf packs on top. They work great over grass b/c they are easier for me to clear than a spook. Can't go wrong with black/loon or white/bone. The 90's will catch white bass pretty good too.
