I have a 1999 ranger 487 vs with mercury 200 efi outboard with mercury tempest 25 pitch prop . would a 24 pitch help me get out of the hole better.
what pitch would help me the most . I was thinking 24 pitch. I m kind of lost on this I don t want to over rev the engine .

If your prop is a Tempest Plus, try removing one PVS plug at a time and see if your hole shot improves. How many RPM's are you able to turn the 25?

Your max rpm's should be about 5,800 with a 200. a 1" pitch change should give you a about a 200 rpm increase. You need to know your max rpms before re-proping. But, yes. A 24 Will give you a better holeshot. As will a 23" 4 blade. You will loose 1-2 mph with a 4 blade but handling and hole shot will improve. I'd stick with a Tempest especially if you have hydraulic steering. The major benefits of a Tempest are, Bow lift, top end speed, and higher engine mounting heights. As previously stated, try holeshot with 1 or 2 plugs removed from tempest.
