I am buying a boat in Tenn and will be registering it in Ga. Does anyone know the tax process? Will I pay sales tax at time of registering or will they mail it me? Did a google search and seen about every answer known to man and it has me confused. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

If you register it in GA you will pay ad valorem taxes every year. You can register it in Alabama and avoid that

I don't pay taxes on mine because it's valued below 7500. They charge personal property tax over that amount I believe. Really really ridiculous
Money grab. I didn't pay a sales tax on mine but maybe GA to GA sale doesnt apply tax.

Yeah I am finagling it for more than that, but also they included sales tax for me to pay in the loan and said that I would just need to pay it when I register the boat, but when I called the tax assessors office, they couldn't give me a straight answer so I have no clue what to do.

I recently bought a boat in TN, registered it in VA. I did not pay TN sales tax at the time of the purchase. I paid VA sales tax when I registered the boat and trailer.

How would I register it in Ala with a Ga residency?

Just go to the court house in Centre Alabama and tell them you want to register a boat, they do not care where you live. lol

I bought in TN and registered it in GA. I didn't pay any taxes. I need to figure out how to register my trailer. But it doesn't stop me from going to lake every weekend.

Was it through a private seller or financed?

If GA is a title state, you would pay sales tax based on the purchase price stated on the back of the title. If a Non-title state, you pay sales tax based on the purchase price posted on a bill of sale. If it's a New boat, you usually pay a base sales tax to both states- 1/2 and 1/2 usually. I bought my used Triton from a GA owner and paid TN sales tax based on the purchase price on the Bill Of Sale. Just call your local Dept of Revenue in GA and ask them what the sales tax percentage is, on a vessel. You should also apply for a GA title when you get your registration. When you go to re sell, some states require a title. Like Missouri. People from a title state won't buy anything without receiving a title.

If you live in Ga and buy in Tn you should not pay sales tax in either. You are exempt from paying Tn tax because you are a Ga resident. Ga does not title boats, so all you will pay will be 12.00 dollars for a Ga tag at your tax commissioners/ tag office. If you register in Ga your local county tax assessors office will pick up your registration off the DNR website and send you a personal property tax bill based on the value of your boat. (Luxury tax) If your bank allowed money for taxes in your loan, be sure to get the boat dealer to write you a check for that amount, or they may keep it. Boat registration in Ga is for 3 years and varies in price depending on length is vessel.

That is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you for that info! Would you happen to know when I will receive the bill? And what percentage of the value? Or does that vary by county?

If you registered in the next month it would come out on DNR boat registration list by November, your county tax assessor will probably pick it up by the first month in 2019. You will probably get a tax assessment bill in the fall about the same time you get your property tax assessment on your home & property. You will be billed on 40% of your boat value. If value is under $7500.00 you usually are exempt from paying tax on boat. Take your bill of sale on boat trailer to tag office in county where you reside, pay 12.00 for a tag plus 1-3 dollars on ad-valorem tax for the year. It will usually be close to the same each year when you renew your trailer tag. Hope this helps!

All I did was download and print out GA DNR forum. Filled out and mailed my fee in. I have owned several boats in the last 8 years. Now non of my boats where worth the $7500, that could be why I have never paid taxes on it.

I would make sure you were cut a check for the amount the figured into the loan. They must have know how to calculate the tax in order to work it in. Make sure you get all the figured in.
