i think it triggers the fish and bait to start the fall migration and feed

Lol... just wondering if the shorter day or when it gets cooler is what causes the change in the fish.

it is the length of daylight available. I have observed big fish moving up uncharacteristically as days begin to get shorter. This happens even though water temps remained at mid-summer levels. The opposite happens in late winter/early spring. Fish move shallower even though the water temps have not warmed at all. After all folks, they are cold blooded.
