Throat Hooked Fish

Great tip. I hate having to leave a hook in a fish. I've often wondered what percentage of gut hooked fish survive if you leave a hook embedded in their throat. If I KNOW they're not going to live I'll usually fillet it at the boat ramp, put it in a zip lock in my cooler and add it to the freezer.

Works every time. on smaller fish there's no room for the hook eye to go so in that case, cut the hook shank with side cutters first.

That's what I was taught to do as a kid. Saved a lot of fish like that. I doubt any fish survives with a hook left in its throat. I think we like to make ourselves feel better by saying it will rust out but I don't think that happens while the fish is still alive.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Some of these fat hooks they are making would take forever to rust out! I never leave a hook in a fish unless I'm live baiting shiners on hooks the size of my pinky tip.
