I am a TN resident and wondering do you pay taxes at the dealership when its out of state and then TN taxes also when registering the boat?

Thanks in advance

You will pay tn taxes when you buy the boat, but won’t pay anything other than registration fees when registering the boat in tn. Taxes are separate from registration in tn

One thing that you can do if you are buying a boat and motor out of state is to pay for them separately. You will have to show the receipt for the boat when you register and pay the fee, but I don't believe that they can make you show them the proof of buying the motor, so thus, no additional fee. Many years ago that was my experience. I had to pay taxes on the boat when it was registered. I had the receipt for the engine in my pocket and when the woman asked me if I purchased the motor out of state I said "Yes" and just looked at her. She never asked to see the receipt.

With auto's, in most states, you pay in your state of residence when purchasing, even though the dealer is out of state. The out of state dealer should not be charging you sales tax.You don't pay tax in Tennessee registering an out of state boat if you paid tax in a different state where you were a legal resident.

I live in TN bought a new boat from dealer in AlabamaI had to pay Alabama taxes whenI bought the boat.then whenI registered in TN I had to paymore taxes inTN because Alabama sales taxes arelower than TennesseeI had to pay the difference. if the Alabama dealer would have charged me the Tennessee taxes rateI would not havehad to pay any more taxes whenI registered the boat in Tennessee </p>
