I spent a few years on the coast many years ago. I saw surf fishermen (never did it myself), dig in the sand for those tiny little shells with the soft innards (cannot remember the name of them) and use them for bait. They used a 14 ft surf casting rod spooled with light line and a 25 pound shock leader so the line would not break during the stress of that big cast. With a good amount of weight, they could cast the bait out of sight. It was fun to watch. I would think 14 lb line would be about right with the 25# shock leader. It did appear to me they wasted too much time digging for the bait, so you might try buying some squid or whatever the bait shops recommend.
