I could not have wrote a better start to this year's gun season. This past Saturday here in Arkansas was the start of our gun season with a kick off of one week of Black Powder muzzle loading. Here it was 40 degrees Saturday morning! Clear and crisp chill in the air, you could see your breath as I climbed my ladder stand in the Arkansas bottoms. It was just a little after 6 a.m. central time so the sun rise had not even started. The deer had been moving early and I did not want to spook them walking in so I was there an hour before I could actually see. Here in this state they require at least three points on one side for it to be a legal buck. The light has to be decent in order to tell if the buck is a shooter or not.

There I was, sitting in my stand while watching the woods come to life. The leaves were falling with a few acorns hitting the ground. The sounds of the woods in the Fall is something I love to look forward to. I heard a flight of geese going over way up making their migration. Nice to be able to enjoy the moment. I did not see even a squirrel but I knew it was only a matter of time as the light increased. Sunrise was at 7:15 and at 7:49 I eased my head to the left and saw a good size body of a deer standing there broadside looking my way at about 80 yards. I was not sure if he was looking at me or just looking my way. I froze, he stared my way as if he was trying to decide if he wanted to come my way or keep going the direction he was standing. After about five minutes he finally flipped his tail and kept walking the direction he had been standing. I raised my gun and got the scope on him. To be honest I thought he was an eight point. I could see a high rack with nice hones above his ears. He stopped again allowing me the chance for a broadside shot. For this area he was a nice one to start the season off with. I shot a little forward but it was good enough. The ol' smoke pole did it's damage. He turned out to be a good size big six point with no brow tines. One of the brow tines you could see where it had broke off and the other side appeared to have never developed.

First week, on the first day, in the first hour, for the first one this year. God is great!!!! Jmax

I went bow hunting yesterday at my camp in Poyen AR. It is closer then my one in Fordyce AR and because of that I go there sometimes even thou the Fordyce area seems to have more and better bucks. The rut here is in full swing. Lots of scrapes and rubs in the woods. The bucks are rutting and chasing. Not sure if the doe are all that receptive yet but the bucks do not seem to care. I saw one nice buck chasing a doe yesterday. She seemed irritated and kept trying to stay ahead of his advances. They never got all that close, 70 yards was about it. I could see a decent rack but not sure I would have let an arrow fly with only one buck tag left for this year and the season is just getting started. The furthest I will shoot my bow is about 45 yards so that was never a decision I had to make. It was fun watching them. Jmax

Where did all the hunters go? Ok gang, let's see some success pics. Is it that bad? The guy I hunt with this past Saturday killed this one at 7:30 a.m. Not a bad one at all. We have been seeing mostly little bucks during the day but we know the big boyz are there, we keep getting them at night on our game cams.
