04 Stratos Trailor,one tire wearing

I'll bet it's the tire pressure. A friend of mine bought a new double axel enclosed trailer and he had one tire wear completely out because he had a nail in the tire and no pressure. He had to buy a new tire and it isn't wearing at all. Read on the tire and see what is the maximum pressure is and put that much air in it.

No..its not the pressure. Tire pressure wear wont go to one side. Alignment will. Odds are its the camber in the end unit.

Only 1 tire will wear "funny". If its a Bias ply and not a good radial then it could be the problem but I highly doubt it.

NO..To align it is a long shot!!! Odds are you may need a new axle thats made in a axle jig.

Heres a link I send to customers.. http://www.procarcare.com/includes/content/resourcecenter/encyclopedia/ch25/25readtirewear.html

skinnywater - 9/26/2007 9:09 AM my guess is weight distribution of the boat on the trailer, you have the boat off center, one of the bunks moved overt ofar.

Nope...wont cause that. 15 years now and I've never seen a trailer do that. The boat would have to be hanging midway over the fender and it isnt gonna ride down the hiway that way or even get off the ramp.

One tire wearing on the outer side of the tire. I checked bearing and it has no play. Can you align wheels on a trailor ?

Check with level?

I would park on good flat surface and check both tires with at least a 24 inch level held vertically. If the two tires don't read the same then it must be the axle.

You could try rotating your axle 90 degrees and change it to a toe problem.

Well if you think it is an alighnment problem, take the wheel off and turn the tire around on the rim, let the other side wear. This is a cheaper fix than an axel. How long has it took to wear on the one side? Whatever this time is, is how much wear you will have left on the tire. Or you could rotate the tires, let the other tire wear a bit.

Toe problems can cause just the outside to wear but the tire would show a noticeable "rake" pattern on the thread as it is actually being dragged across the asphalt. When wheel bearings become loose or worn the tire wears more on the inside because the tire tends to lean in at the top while driving straight. Low tire pressure causes the tire to wear on the inside and outside, as too much air pressure causes the tire to wear in the center.

If the rest of the tire, and the other tire, show no other abnormal wear patterns, it sounds like too much positive caster which would put most of the load on the outside of the tire.

BBass, is there no way to correct this other than a new axle ? Are shim kits available if it has bolt on spindles ? I've chained a lot of front ends to the rack and used a hydraulic jack to gently persuade bent components back to specs. Could that be done to a Stratos trailer ?

Just my $.02

It could be but unlike a car, theres not allot of steel there. When you force the steel into another location, it looses strength. If the end unit has just now started doing that then its been knocked out of toe or camber.

Seriously, you can have it adjusted but trailer manufactures, most of us, suggest a new axle. If the axle has a drop spindle, a new spindle can easily be welded in a jig. If its a straight spindle then I really think the best nd safest thing to do is just replace it.

Question: how bad is it wearing out tires and how quickly?

If the steel is that thin it wouldn't be recommended or safe. I guess it's nothing like twin I beam !emoSmile

Its 1/4 inch thick..or should be. The welds would worry me there too. You NEVER know what gonna happen and it is your investment riding on it. Some people let thier cars go that way...you and I wouldnt.
