Had this happen to a friend the other day - luckily he had a buddy near by in the woods that agreed to carry the other bird out and check in for him....what if he was alone? Illegal possession? what would be the ruling for this lucky/unlucky event? Surely this has happened before......

It happened to me several years back on opening day. I was shooting at a bird down the mountain from me. When I shot I got up and ran down hill looked down the bench and there were two flopping around. I never saw the other bird. I didn't know what to do, but I wasn't gonna feed the coyotes. I went to the gas station and Mr. Greenjeans was there. I got nervous because he was checking in the birds and was looking them over real good. I told him the truth and showed him both birds, he checked in both birds and gave me two permanent tags, laughed and said things happen, but they counted as 2 tags, and only left me with one more bird. (back before the REAL License system and a 4 bird bag limit).

If feel like if you had an honest 2 kill, one shot, then be honest at the checking station. Going home with an untagged bird would be more risky!

This was asked on tndeer in the TWRA question section. This is what a TWRA official said "First, pass up the shot if there is any possibility about hitting more than one bird. If you kill two, call the county WO and see how he/she wants to handle the violation."

It happens....I had that happen many a time duck hunting. My best or worst, depending on how you look at it, was a group of teal that came in over the decoys fast and tight. I shot twice and five birds hit the water. emoEek My worst by far was duck hunting on a huge minnow farm and saw a giant group of ducks on the far side in the water. I crawled and waded until I was on one side of a divide road and they were on the other. I eased up and looked out at a huge group of what I thought was mallards. The sun was coming up in my face and I could only see the silhouette of the ducks. I lowered my gun so I would mow them down at water level. I fired three fast shots and killed 5 big ducks. Problem was they were all Canvasbacks. emoDoh The limit was one per person. emoBang There was a point system then and a Canvasback was a 100 point duck and that was the limit, 100 points. I had two guys with me and gave two more away to a couple other guys. We were done for the day and I learned my lesson to make sure I knew the kind of ducks I was shooting at. emoBadLanguage Jmax
