Well the second weekend has come and gone. This cold weather has some serious buck movement here in south Arkansas. The bucks are chasing and that means they are not thinking as carefully as they normally are. emoDance There were two guys who had not killed one yet so they stayed today while everyone else either went home(me) or had to go back to work. This morning both had bucks go by them that were shooters and both dropped them in their tracks. An 8 pt and a 6 pts. This is one of the best if not the best opening modern gun hunt we have had in the 40 year history of our little club. That is our six members and one guest all taking a deer in the first 8 days of the season. emoEek I was asked if the 3 point rule was having any effect on our deer herd and I said to Churly I was not sure. This year I would say "Yes", for sure and it is showing up. A couple of our guys passed on smaller shooters also since they were down to only one buck tag after tagging one already. One of our guys was living right, he got the nine and then Saturday shot a huge eight, one of the biggest deer we have seen in some time. He plans to mount it. That makes us have 2- 6 pts., 2- 7 pts., 3- 8 pts. and a nine pt.!!! Not bad at all.

It is not just about the killing, I love deer camp. The fellowship, the ribbing of each other and the seeing of friends you have not seen since last deer season at camp. The story telling of past hunts where it seems they get better as time goes on. emoBigsmile Sounds like some of the fishing stories I have heard. emoZipped Here are a few more pictures of the deer taken this year. The first are the ones killed this morning by the two guys who stayed and the last two are the big eight. Those pictures of that eight does not do it justice. emoGeezer Jmax

nice!It doesnt matter how you manage it, as long as your happy with the results. looks like fun!

I agree. We do shoot some smaller racked deer but only one is suppose to be small. Then you horn hunt. emoAngel Jmax

My Buddy from Hot Springs who started that camp with me 40 years ago just shot his second and final buck yesterday morning there. Adds another 8 pt to the list. He shot the small 6 pt Monday morning and then this 8 pt yesterday on Tuesday morning. He said it was just a little too big to let it pass by. emoBooHoo He is done on his quota for bucks. I think what we are seeing this year is a couple things. One is us not shooting doe, second is David who is a logger by trade has kind of taken the lead on converting our land to a deer habitat paradise, he has brought in a couple crews and cleared off about 3-40 acre plots, replanted with pines as well as a couple food source acres, then he monitors the deer for us all year due to him living right next to our property. You can't best having a life time logger managing your land for free. He does make money on the trees they harvest but that is the normal, nothing extra for the deer stuff. emoBigsmile Then finally by him living there he monitors poachers and trespassers on our property. It now seems that in years past when the season on modern game started we had a lot of our buck leave for better grounds. Now they seem to come here from other properties. emoGeezer Then as I have already mentioned the 3 point rule seems to really be helping. Here is the 8 taken by Jimmy yesterday.... emoThumbsup Jmax
