Well I have been anticipating this day for a couple of weeks now, which is unusual for me b/c I would rather fish than hunt!!! But I've been fortunate to have gotten 2 decent deer the last 2 years, so that has added fuel to this fire.
Got to the stand a little after 5:30 this morning, a little late for my liking as it was beginning to get a little light, but i made it to my stand without anything snorting at me so i was feeling pretty good. I got settled into my stand and I heard one behind me snorting...thought that was a good sign as I at least knew there was SOMETHING around, haven't done too much scouting, but my dad hasn't seen anything while farming it so i wasn't sure what to expect this morning. It started to get light around 6 and a doe came out to my left, she moved across the field rather fast and disappeared into the far woods. At about 6:15 another doe came out and then what i thought was another doe was right behind her, the back one turned out to be a 4 or a 5 point. He was lowering his head and following the same path as the first doe that came out. They both disappeared into the far woods with the 4 point coming back out and feeding for a few minutes. By this point, the wind was blowing rather stiff directly into my face, so I wasn't sure I'd have anymore action this morning.
At around 7 I was just looking around the field and saw a nice 8 pt to my immediate left and looked like he might be a shooter. He looked away from me and I could see plenty of daylight between the antlers, so I decided I was gonna take him. About the time I got my gun up and ready to zero in on this deer a pretty nice 6 or 7 point was directly behind him, so I checked him with my binoculars to make sure which deer i wanted (at this point i'm thinking this is a GREAT problem to have), I decided I wanted the 8 point, so I settled in on him and squeezed off the ol' 30.06 behind the shoulder and made a good shot getting part of his lungs as I could see blood coming from his mouth and nose. He was only around 30-35 paces from me and he probably ran 30 yards further out in front of me and fell in front of me. I look at him through the binoculars and see him still struggling and watch in amazement as he stands back up, I was ready with another round but he gave out and fell back down and then I knew I had my deer. I gave him another 30 minutes before I went and looked at him, thankfully there wasn't any ground shrinkage on this buck. This one was very similar to the deer I killed 2 years ago and this one has a little character with a small hole on the left side. Enjoy the pics. Now if I can just catch a 5 lb smallie Sunday at Pickwick it will be a GREAT weekend!!!!!!!! emoBigsmile emoBigsmile emoBigsmile carl
