Has anyone got a 17 cal? How are they to squirrle hunt with? I hear they are accurate, but they are rough on the meat. I guess you try for head shot. emoScratch
IMHO a 17hmr is too much for a squirrel. I have shot a few with them and you HAVE to take a head shot! They are extremely accurate though. A 22 long or short is plenty. A 22 long with target ammo is perfect since it is slower, does less damage, and is more accurate.
I have split coyote dome in half with a .17HMR. It is a great cartridge and is most certainly not expensive. It shoots flat and fast, but due to the tiny pills, it loses energy pretty quickly and doesn't reach out as far as you might want it to. Way too fast for squirrel.
I have one and it's great for getting rid of unwanted varmits....squirrels...ground squirrels....groundhogs.....your neighbors noisy guinni fowl...etc. As for meat hunting with it, not a chance, unless you like chewing on a foot.
