Can anyone tell me how to rebuild the carbs on my 98 Merc 225??? I took it to a guy the first week in May, told him that it was slow out of the hole and occasionally I had to rev the motor to clear it out so it would take off. He still has it. He said he rebuilt the carbs, but when I got it back it wouldnt plane out. I took it back to him, he borrowed someone's computer and hooked it up to it and said the Throttle Position Sensor was off. He said he fixed that. Got it back again, still wouldn't plane out. Took it back, again, he said the timing sensor was bad. All I know is, it was running when I took it to him, now it won't. He did tell me that when he rebuilt the carbs, the floats were set to high. So he adjusted them down to what he said was Mercury spec. That is basically all he touched on the motor and now it won't plane out. Can anyone recommend someone who can fix this boat before fishing season is over?? I've already missed the spawn, don't want to miss the rest of summer.

it's an offshore engine....it is computerized....the computer controls the timing but it still has carbs. Like I said, it was running when I took it to him, just flooding a little. Now, it cranks and idles but won't plane. The only thing he really touched was the carbs... don't know if he set the floats too low...when I ask him about the floats, he says not to worry about them because they're set to factory specs. If it was running before he adjusted the floats to "factory specs" shouldn't it run even better now???

May not have anything to do with the carbs. May be a coincidence. The flooding may have been a electrical issue and it actually broke when he worked on it. Not defending him, just know how things sometimes seem. A TPS and temp switch will cause similiar issues. If the TPS was bad it will actually sound the alarm and flash the low oil indicator to warn the operator. With the ignition having a ECU (computer) you need to talk it to someone with a DDT (scan tool) to see if the module is seeing a problem and when the problem occurs, there should be a data stream that can be monitored and they can verify a lot of things that may or may not cause the issue. I do not have a DDT but there is a lot of stuff I can check and verify. I can test the stator peak voltage and test the peak voltage of the CDMs (ignition coil).

A stupid question..... Has the plug been change recently?? A fouled plug can create the same issue or if the incorrect plug is used, the CDM (coil) will not have enough voltage to fire the air/fuel mix. The correct plugs for a 98 is a Champioin QL77CC with a .035 gap. Just my thoughts.

Thanks James,
The alarm is going off, so he hooked it up to a DDT, and it showed 2 codes, one for the TPS and one for the timing sensor. He said the TPS would be the cause, so he set/reset it. Took it to the lake, still wouldn't plane out. So he ordered a new timing sensor.. and that's where we are now... just seems that since it was running when I took it to him, it should be running now. And 6 weeks to fix a couple of sensors??? Just seems like he's guessing at it and throwing parts at it to try to fix it. If it were the timing sensor, would it still rev on dry ground and not plane on water??? If the timing sensor isn't working, then it shouldn't rev at all.

Like I said, Not defending him but I do know how this crap breaks. The day Ditchdoc666, Wes and I shot the videos of his boat it was runnig like a champ. Put it on the trailer and all was well. 2 days later he goes fishing and started it and it wouldn't idle. The stator went out and was causing it not to idle (running on 3 cylinders). No indication problems or warning. So things can just break. Keep us up to date on it. emoToast

Talked to him today, finally, and he has put the timing sensor on it. I asked if he had run the boat yet, nope. I asked if he turned the key on, nope. But, the boat is ready to be picked up. I am not going up there to get the boat, without him at least turning the key on and seeing if the alarm is still going off. I have went and picked the boat up 4 times already and took it back to him 4 times because the alarm is going off and it won't plane out. He said he would take it with him to B&B Marina tomorrow and run it. I hope it's fixed... If not, I'll have it up to you Wednesday.
