After letting my father out do me last weekend it was time for a little redemption last Sat. The morning started off pretty cool with a north wind blowing. I set up on a the edge of a green field knowing the birds liked to visit this field after or during a heavy rain. Only heard on bird gobble this morning andf he was a long way off. Did have seven hens join me in the field so i was in a pretty good spot. Noticed the hens had been roosting along the creek next to a bluff. Walked, called and watched the different fields all day and only saw one gobbler but he was with hens and showed no interest in my calling. about two hours before dark a headed up to the ridge were the hens had roosted the night before. wasnt long before the show started, first it was the hens showing up then a pretty good gobbler showed up and was agravating two of the hens they are still about a hundred yards away from me at this time. Next to show up was a group of jakes, 5 in all, this really made the old bird mad and the fight was on. This went on for a pretty good while and I was smilling to my self when I hear birds coming up behind me. I am standing on the edge of a cedar thicket leaning up against a large cedar tree I slowly ease my head around to see behind me an there are four hens and and a good gobbler . They ease on by me heading on closer to the bluff giving me a chance to raise my shotgun and get a bead on the gobbler. He never knew I was there. He ended up weighing 22 lbs. 1 1/4 spurs and 11 in. beard. emoSmile
