Ok I got a new boat. It's a 19' vip with a 150 johnson gt. Everything was fine for a while, then at higher speed it seemed liked it would cut in half speed and rpm wise. The motor is an 87, I checked the plugs when we got home and they looked burnt and brown, I also found the retaining clip for the throttle linkiage had fallen out. I dont think it was the throttle linkage though. The boat would be doing fine for a while then it would just cut off, not die just slow down. It did this at all rpm ranges more so on the high end. I checked there is no inline fuel filter, this will soon be added. Do you think its just old gas and bad plugs? The boat has been sitting a year, I added 14 gallons before we left. Also I can move the Motor by hand at the stern almost an inch in each direction before it moves the steering cables. Any way to tighten this thing up. It pulls HARD to the right when running. Im not use to that, I only had a 90 hp before but this thing pulls hard right. I thank you for your help.

If it is running out of fuel it may damage it. It will cause a surge at high speed. The correct color is chocolate brown or paper bag brown. That is doing a high speed chop. If you change the plugs and it still surges. While it is acting up, have someone pump the bulb and see if it goes away. If so it is a fuel delivery issue.

The pulling is called torque steer. It is worse with some props. There is a wedge called a torque tamer that will help a LOT on the pull. You can also adjust the trim tab (if it stays in the water while running) and take some of it away.

Hope this helps.
