he caught it on live bait. he was on nickajack, exact location unknow. i think he was downriver a short ways, but he didnt say. he said he caught two or three small spots and then that monster. he goes down there and fishes live bait in the cold months. and i regret to tell u that he did not let it go. i tried to talk him into letting it go and getting a replica, but he chose not to. normally i get mad at that stuff, but he is a good friend of mine, so i let him slide with it. but man what a pig. a 7 lb smallie is a hog and thats definitely a trophy sized fish.

That was a beauty but if you think about it, at that size it may not have lasted another year, just too old. Selective harvest is a tough issue and we've had some heated discussions on the forum before about it but as long as someone isn't "raping the fishery" I think that if someone makes a personal decision to skin mount a fish like that or even eat it they have the rigtht to do it and not be given a hard time about it. I sure would have been excited to have that fish on my line next week however.

that is one fat, heavy brownfish right there emoToast ....and a darn respectable dip (1/2 can?) you're buddy's sporting, too!! emoWorthy
Probably spawned for several seasons and his/her dna has been passed along to future generations. If you believe studies from biologists, older fish as less successful spawning as younger move virile fish. I wouldn't keep a fish like this, but it won't hurt future generations by his going on a wall somewhere.

i have no problem with somebody keeping a personal best(especially one like this)
but keeping a limit of 3-4 lb.ers...although legal...is uncool, imo.
i'm a big fan of slot limits, btw.
