20 FT Deep

What are some effective ways to catch bass @ 20ft that are hunkered down? I usually resort to a carolina rig to get down that far. That's a long ways down for a cb. Maybe a big shakey head or swimbait? Just curious what method some use and are willing to share for dragging them our of deeper water.

I like to drop shot them..only negative is the size which I normally catch is not big fish worthy

I’ll throw a 3/16 or 1/4 oz shakey head that deep. I used to think the way you do (would need heavier for deeper), but once i caught a couple fish, my confidence sky rocketed. I like a 3/4oz football jig too. Always have a carolina rig as well. Deep cranking is a b****, but it’s effective and with the right setup its not as bad, but still pretty rough. I will also throw a bigger paddle tail on a 1/2 oz jig head and yoyo it off the bottom. I haven’t done this as much but slow rolling an A Rig is good. I don’t drop shot as much as i should, but my buddy does with a pretty light weight too. When the current and wind are pretty strong I will upsize some but in my opinion, the lighter the better.

20 really isnt that deep, there are a NUMBER of ways to reach those fish. 6, 8 or 10xd will get there, underspin, hair jig, flutter spoon, scrounger head or the new 1oz pro shimmy jigs that True South Custom Lures is making, thread a swimbait, fluke or jerky J on it and they munch it!

They're old school but blades and spoons can trigger strikes from deeper fish when other baits won't. Consider a Damiki rig (it's not just for winter, you know). Add a TX rig to the other soft plastic presentation suggestions above.

For soft plastics, recommend using a buoyant bait - something that'll suspend off of the bottom a bit. It'll have more action, make it easier for the fish to hone in on. Might need to adjust line and hook type to accommodate the buoyancy.

The suggestions above should take care of you. 20 ft really isn’t that deep. To put it in perspective, it’s about the length of a bass boat. A lot of it just has to do with giving the bait more time to fall or using a deeper diving CB. Good luck to you and hope you get some good confidence with it.

Yeah if you think about it 20ft isn't deep at all. Just think, a lot of bass boats are around 20ft long. Then you realize 20ft isn't bad at all!

Could not have said it better. I will add a heavy one ounce chatter bait with a swim on it and a one or one and a half ounce spinner bait. Both are baits you just cast out, let it sink like a worm, when you see your line go slack you know it hit bottom. Then just slow roll it back or bump it back by raising and dropping the rod tip. They will usually crush it on the fall. emoThumbsup Jmax

So at 20' what triggers the strike. Not thinking you have much light on Chick at 20' so is it more about something that is going to create vibrations. I understand that bass have superior sight compared to us 5x. I have not had luck fishing for the deep ones but I am fairly new.

I always throw a jigging spoon or my c.rig w/black lizard ! Deadly baits for me .
