Yesterday I braved the elements and went fishing. Cranked engine and let her warm up and blasted off. I fished for a while and idled around and fished some more, motor was running normal. When I came back to the ramp I felt motor surging, at 1st i thought it was the strong winds but noticed my rpms dropping 3 to 400 and back up, I knew somthing wasn't right. I replaced the water/fuel filter and plugs this year. I had been using seafoam but switched to chemtool. </p>

I have the same motor but mines an 07, last year I had the same thing go on you have described and it was a fouled plug. I would start with the plugs and go from there,

Plugs are the cheapest and easiest thing to try. I always suggest to keep a set of plug and something to change them with in the boat. Most of the time they will loose power and will happen miles away from the ramp. Also take a close look under the cowling and look for any signs of hoses that have came off or fuel leaks.

I replaced plugs because I was told to use nothing but ngk, because I put autolite plugs in. I still have the autolite plugs. I ran those from August of 09 till May this year and didnt have any trouble from those. Would u put the autolites back in or get new plugs? Ive been having problems the ngk fouling. Is it ok to use a cross refrence plug like I did? The guy at advance told me it was fine because sold alot of them when he lived in Florida.   emoBang

If you were not having problems when you replaced them I would say try them. I would stick them in and see if the same thing happens. If not, then decide to go get a new set of NGK's. Too many times there is not a exact cross reference for plugs and they give you the closest thing which may be ok and maybe not. I always try to run exactly what came in them. Just my .02

Thanks wrenchn for your help, I'll get a new set and try that. My next project will be replacing water pump emoScratch it has to be easier than the Johnson faststrike I used to have. emoThanks again.

Most Yammie that I have done are simpler than OMC's (Johnson/ Evinrude). I honestly could not tell you on that one. Very rarely do they change design on the linkage when they have one that works well.

The hardest thing I remember was that dang shifting rod that had a carter key that was hard to get to. Hope the plugs fix problem, the last time I had a issue it was a fouled plugs but it was more of a miss than a surge like this time. Sure hope its not fuel related. I checked all the fuel lines under cowling Sunday and didnt see any signs of leaks or smell of gas. Ill give an update after plug replacement.

Best I can tell it is like a most Mercury's where it unbolts and just slips off then when you reassemble it, you have to line up a female splined rod to a male splined rod. Here is the page out of a Yamaha HPDI manual and the lower illistration identical in the parts catalog.

Took to lake yesturday after replacing plugs. Didn't have time to run for a long time, but long enough to tell it was the plugs. I slowly warmed it up and then blasted of. No missing or surging @ 4500rpm , throttled to WOT and she ran perfect. GPS 58.4 mph @ 5700rpm. Thanks again for help. emoToast
