got a 2007 yamaha 150 and the speedometer quit working last year. went out one day and it was working and then about 2 hours into the day i notice it would only go up to about 30 mph and then it quit doing anything at all. just now going to fix. not sure what the problem could be. didnt know if there was a way to check if the gauge is bad or if it is the cable. and suggestions would help. thanks!!!!!!!

look on the front of the foot of the motor, see if there is a small notch, they get clogged real easy, i actually had to run a drill bit into mine to get it cleaned out, but that is where i would start, the notch is only about 1/4 inch or smaller, almost looks like a nick in the foot, try a pick or something first, and be careful if you have to go to a drill bit because it can mess up the rubber tube on the back side

I have straightened out a 5/0 hook and used it to pull the wood, etc out of the nick. The barb helps.

i cleaned it out and tryed it in the driveway and it still does not work. but do i have to be in the water and moving for it to register? wasnt sure if it would register with using the water hose hooked to motor or not. if i dont have to be in the water then it still dont work and need more help if anybody has anymore suggestions. thanks

Gotta be in the water for it to pass enough to the gauge.

Like I said, those Yami speedometer pickups are crap. You don't have GPS? As soon as you clear it out, it will be clogged within 2-3 trips if not the first.

ok. thanks. i wasnt sure. i do have a gps but they installed it on the unit in the front of boat. dumb. i was thinking about having it put by the steering wheel with a ram mount, but it will cost over 200 dollars. and money is tight right now cause i just had a new baby. i wasnt too concerned about it but was going to fix it if it was a quick fix. it was clogged up so maybe that is all that it is. maybe one day i will be able to move my 797 back there or maybe get lucky and just buy a whole new unit. thanks for the help

IF you have a air compressor you can have a friend shoot air thru the opening while you watch the gage. If it does not move the gage the line will be stopped up.

I gave up keeping mine cleaned. I just use my GPS.

What he said. I gave up after cleaning mine out about 10 times. Besides, when the speedometer did work, it was always off by 5mph or better.
