Quick question:

Just got my first gun - a .22 revolver. Got it for home defense, but I'm interested in going hunting for small game with it...after I do plenty of research on safety while hunting and grow more comfy with the gun.

Anybody else out there do this and do any good? I'd obviously just be doing small game. I'd love to bag some rabbits and figure out how to clean 'em up for dinner.

I have a Ruger MK2 and its a tack driver. I have thought about hunting smaller game with it but never have and probably never will. Rifles are a lot easy to scope in a target and make the kill. Now a 44mag for deer. I'd be game for that!

Just my opinion but a 22 as a home defense weapon is on the light side big time. I keep a 12 gauge pump loaded but have a 9mm within reach at all times. I also carry that gun.

Sounds like you just getting started into something that will really grow on you. Then again you could just be wanting to try a small pistol for hunting something you normally do with a bigger gun. I don't know...either way, enjoy the right to have it and if you don't have a permit to carry, get one. Support your rights and have fun!!!

Thanks! Wanted the gun to be something my wife is comfy with. Tried out .38s also but she wasn't comfy with them. And yeah, I'm pretty excited.

Yup...I understand the whole wife thing. Mine is picky about that too and still hates them. Good call for her. Did you have her shoot any 22mags?

Yup. She shot a few rounds through the one we got. She's not excited like me but she understands the need to feel comfy with it.

Ive seen .22s bounce off the ground and spin in weird directions when some guys were hunting rabbits with them. Be 100% safe and leagal and hunting will be a lot of fun. Good luck!

I have a .22 Colt Scout Buntline Revolver. I hunted with it as teenager for squirrels. Back then there weren't as many houses dotting the countryside. My Mom bought it for my Dads birthday back in 1960. When he died a few years ago my Mom gave it to me. Of all my rifles and pistols it is my favorite.

Ha! Just realized what you meant the first time. I was thinking of a magazine for a semi-automatic. Not a magnum. We didn't shoot any of those as the dealer told me the ammo is 5 times the cost. Since I want my wife to shoot a lot and want to be able to shoot it a lot without being cost prohibitive I went with the .22 long rifle Taurus revolver. Sorry for the confusion!

I honestly would never recommend a 22 revolver for home defense. If some drug induced scum bag can take severa hits with a 9 mm. Then that same person would only get pissed off from being shot with 22 LR. Unless of course you shoot thier eyes out first. At a minimum for HD - a Ruger 10/22 with an extended magazine would do. Then you can put 20 plus shots into the bad guy to hopefully take them down. Did you think about trying a .25 or .32 cal pistol? Bigger than a .22 but still smaller than the .38!

1. Ricochet is indeed something to keep in mind. Thanks for the reminder! 2. That scout sounds like an amazing memory and gun. 3. Being a gun newbie I'd not even heard of a .25 but the .22 we got dies hold 9 rounds which is pretty good. I'm hoping that'll be enough to do the job. Also once my wife becomes more comfy with it I plan to get a .38 and have her shoot that a bunch until she feels comfy with it. Thanks for the tips!

Here is what a Colt .22 Scout Buntline Revolver looks like. Hard to conceal these big boys.

If you want a hot load for home defense, CCI Stinger will do the trick. It is a 32 grain hollow point. It has some really good reviews.

For home defense for the Wife would be a minimum 32 Cal semi-auto. A 22 will just get someone hurt ... Hunter safety course, Licenses, being able to get within range without the foliage this time of year. I would have some considerations before I would do any serious planning on going hunting.
