I have a 2005 225 Ho etec and it doesn't cold start well at all. I turn the key over wait for the self check to go off and then turn the key all the way over and it will turn over for a few seconds but then it dies. It will not idle at all first thing in the morning. The only way to keep it running is to keep it in neutral and rev it to 1000 rpms and it still wont idle. When I try to put it in gear I have to put the hotfoot down a little to keep it running. Once I get it running and run for the first time of the day it will run and idle fine. Does anybody know what could be going on? I just bought the boat so maybe this is normal in this cold weather?

Does it have a choke in the key switch? I have an evinrude 225 Ho on my boat and you have to push the key in when you turn it over to engage the choke.

dont know if this relates due to age but i have found my old johnson does best when i prime the bulb 30 minutes or so before i plan to start it then prime it again right before i do. starts way easier that way and idles better too. I do sometimes have to sit on the choke and push it when rpms start to drop while the motor is warming. Again i know its not the same motors by far but maybe worth a try.

Sounds like you need to put a set of spark plugs in it mine does that when they get burnt take one out check gap should be 28 thousands I bet yours are about 60

Thanks for all of the replies so far. It does not have a manual choke that I have found. You can not push the key in. I believe it has an automatic choke and that could possibly be the problem. Maybe it doesn't have one because most people that I know with that motor can push their key in to choke it. Before starting I primed the bulb and that didn't help. It could possibly be plugs. Im hoping that that is all that it is. Im probably going to take it into the shop this week to let them hook it up to the computer to make sure that it is not an injector or something like that because I would hate to run it much with a bad injector because it will end up blowing the motor if it is. I don't think it would be and injector because they were just sent off and checked and cleaned in November.

Had problem similar. A good friend told me to raise the motor to where prop half out of water. It helps with the back pressure. Does the trick for me

Brock was exactly right. It ended up being plugs. I don't see how it was running at all. It cranks right up and idles now on a boot. Thanks so much for all of the input.
