Birds were gobbling pretty good this morning. The one that I went to was hammering hard. When I got within 200 yd. of him I realized that he was across the line, and the landowner hunts, so I don't cross him. I set up at the property line and started calling, then the hens came. I watched three of them parade past me within 40 yds. headed straight to him. He never gobbled again, but pretty quick another one did about 200 yd. behind me. I scooted around to the other side of the tree, yelped twice and he hammered. He gobbled twice more and shut up. I saw something move, and the more that I studied it, I could tell that it wasn't a turkey, but a yard dog headed towards the bird. Not another gobble. I sat there for about 30 minutes, looking at nothing, lit a cigarette, and about halfway through it I saw something move to my right. Two jakes were within 20 yd. of me. When they went behind a rock I spit my cigarette out, turned, took aim, and now we're gonna' have turkey-ka-bobs for supper. It's kinda' like shooting a small buck...sometimes you gotta' have meat!

By the way, Spurhunter, that Hevi-shot does a number on a bird's head!

Super deal Danny! Dont worry about the jake issue, gotta start the seaon off ya know!

Glad the shot worked for you, no cripples with that stuff!

Glad to hear they are hammering! Nothing wrong with a jake if your looking for a meal! I'm looking forward to getting started next weekend, I'm taking a youth out after his first and gonna try to film it.

Again congrats!

Heck ya man! Glad they were talkin to ya.As long as you feel like you succeeded in a days hunt dont matter what kinda bird you take to yhe kitchen;) emoThumbsup So far i believe we are the only ones that talk turkey anyways....congratsemoToast

Sounds like a great morning. Lots of stuff going on and you got a turkey, which is why you went in the first place. I have not seen a recipe for cooking a long beard anyway.
