The legendary Drumking and I hit Racoon Mtn this morning to chase some spaaaats. With the severe cold front and forecast for double digit winds I was not sure what to expect and I did not want to dissapoint Drumking on my first guide trip with him. I choose Racoon Mtn due to the wind forecast as my favorite banks are facing North West so I figured we would be out of the wind. Could not have planned it any better.

We started fishing around 8:45 or so and by 10 we had 10 spots in the livewell. We ended up putting 34 bass in the boat along with 15 or so google eyes. Man the google eyes are thick right now and they just destroy the jigs. We tried to get on some bluegill but managed to only catch about 15 small fish. I did catch a 4-5 lb channel cat on a cricket with 4lb line. Big bass of the day was a 2.3 lb Meanmouth. This was an odd looking fish as the color was a blend of a spot and smallmouth but the fish had a very distinct tooth patch. This is the first fish I have caugth that I can say was for sure a meanmouth out of the hundreds of spots I have caught of the past 4 years.

I will say the fish of the day was a 9lb drum. To catch a drum fishing with a guy named Drumking was a treat.

Water temp was around 63-65 degrees and most of the bass were within 5 feet of the bank. Almost all of the bass came on black/blue pig n jigs (what else) as well as the google eyes and drum.

Thanks for riding with me today Dickie. It was a blast!

Michael, I want to thank you for taking me this AM to see the Raccoon place. First time for me down there at that gorgeous place. I would love to see this place in the fall when the leaves are in full color.

I did jump out to a big lead on MrWhiskers this am, but he quickly caught up and surpassed me. I have never caught as many goggle eyes (rock bass) in my life. I think that I might have caught 10 or so of the spots and 1/2 doz of the goggle eyes. When we decided to bluegill fish, it was so windy that we couldn't stay on any good place. We caught a ton of little gills. MrWhiskers used crickets and I used squirming squirts in the pumpkin seed color. Fish liked both. We marked what we think were catfish on some of Michael's favorite ledges, but we weren't prepared to fish for those. That is another trip. I can't hardly wait.

Thanks again, Michael for being such a gracious host. I enjoyed just sitting in the back of the boat observing you catch fish and looking at the guineas, mules, other various animals down on the river gorge. We didn't see another fishing boat today either. Wow! emoBigsmile emoGeezer

Oh, BTW, I almost forgot to mention that I caught a spot that MrWhiskers let get off with his pork trailer. How do I know that it was the same fish? He spit both pork trailers off at the same time when I hauled his little behind in the boat.

Gotcha!

Your more than welcome Dickie. In a couple of weeks we will go after the fish with wiskers.

Good job guys! I am surprise you caught that many with the front passing through. It is certainly a raw day out there. The pics were wonderful also. After this cold snap gets by us things will really start going.

Drumking and I were talking about cold fronts and spots today and for the most part the spots don't get affected like the largemouths do. The one thing that can really mess up spot fishing is when they drop the river. Those fish hate for the water to go down for some reason.

Good job Mr.wisker & Mr.King. You guys make it look easy.

Great job guys. The spots turned out to be a little more reliable than the largemouth I see. One day I hope to get on that end.
