I just recently got into the handgun world other than home protection. I currently have a sigma 9mm. Ive read lots of reviews with negative feedback on the newer ones. I must have got one of the few good ones. Anyways I'm wanting to.step up a bit to something with a little more power. At first I wanted one of the entry level 1911s. Rock island tactical and the Springfield GI were a couple I had looked at and liked. But it seems the more I look around I keep going back to the Springfield XD .45 instead of a 1911. It just seems like a better overall choice for the money I have to spend, which is 550-600. Anyone have any advice?

.45 is a great round, it is definitely a man stopper! Not the cheapest gun to blast away on the range with but very moderately priced (unlike 10mm). I prefer M&Ps but the Springfield XDm's are good guns as well as Glock. Shoot all 3 and pick which one shoots best for YOU not what you read on here. Picking between the 3 is a Ford\Chevy\Dodge question they are all great guns and very capable to perform the job at hand. As for the 1911 they are great guns and I own several but they are limited by ammo capacity and the base models can be finicky; they like to run pretty wet and need attentive cleaning. Detail strip and cleaning can also be pretty involved...these are problems you typically don't run into with a polymer pistol. One thing to note is 1911's are very ammo picky especially with Self Defense loads (HP's) unless you are dropping some coin on a nice kimber\colt or s&w. I would spend the 5-600 on a polymer of your choosing and save up and get a nice upper end 1911, you will be happier in the long run...been down this road before, lol emoLaugh

Best of luck! let us know which one you get!

Can't go wrong with a Springfield either. Own two and have never had a problem. But I can't resist the urge of a 1911 ! Large to carry but great for range and defending the castle.

Listen to Rook, he gave some outstanding advice. I also love the 1911, but for flat-out performance you just cant beat the Glock/XD/M&P options. Clean, dirty, cheap ammo, etc, etc.

I have a colt 1911 on order now. She is supposed to be here this week. The hand gun manager was really high on the Springfield models. But being hardheaded me, I just wanted and had my heart set on a Colt!

Piss on the plastic, buy a .45 with a backbone. This Sig P220 was $480.00 + transfer early last year.

One thing I like about the 1911 vs. the high capacity varieties is it's a bit easier to carry concealed. Most of my double stack guns stay in the nightstand, centerconsole or the safe.

One thing to be noted on the Sig Sauer there is that is an unheard of price unless you are getting an old Law Enforcement gun which has had several thousand round down the tube or someone owes you some money. emoLaugh

Probably came from GT's? For the money you can get a brand new polymer that will shoot just a well, is easier to work on (if you ever need to) and is half the weight. Sig Sauers are fantastic guns but not ideal at all for conceal carry, which is what it sounds like the orginal post was heading towards. I love my 229 but is just too heavy for IWB carry. Again don't listen to what people have to say about pissing on here on the post go shoot them for yourself find out what fits your budget, what is most comfortable and most importantly what you shoot best. They are all good guns but not all guns are equal depending on the situation. I will tell you I would much rather have had a Glock when I was in the desert over an M9, Sig Suaer or a 1911. I will also tell you in the summer wearing shorts I would rather be carrying a 5 shot snubbie iwb rather than a fullsize pistola. Choose depending your application.

Worn out police trade my ass, a Gun Broker auction with a starting bid of $1.00. emoCool Glock, the "RG" of center fire hand guns. emoVomit

Just my .02 cents worth. See if you can find a range that has the above mentioned pistols for you to try. Personally owning and firing all of the above mentioned pistols, I currently prefer the feel of the M&P Smith and Wessons. The Springfields are top notch also. Having shot them in several different calibers I honestly feel that they are the most accurate behind the Sig pistols. Sigs shoot very straight for me personally. Glock's are ok. I've been down the Glock road a time or two. For some reason, I can't shoot them well. I have fat fingers and the last few generations have the notches the don't seem to line up well with my fingers at all. Very uncomfortable for me to grip. One exception in the Glock category though is the Glock 20 SF. Loves me some 10mm round. You gotta have the good 10mm stuff to really see this baby shine. The SF, (or short frame) has a smaller diameter grip so you can get your hand around it better. They offer it in the .45 caliber (Glock 21sf) also so be sure and check a couple of those out before you buy a Glock. If Smith and Wesson M&P or Springfield XD or XDm was offered up in 10mm, I'd be standing in line waiting on the first one.

See if you can at least get a few of these in your hand and see how they feel. You want something that feels natural to point when you bring it up to shoot. Some guns just seem to find there way to the target a little better than others. It all depends on what works best for you like spurhunter mentioned.

First off thank you all very much for your opinions. After several stressful days of researching, shooting, and just plain tormenting gun shops. I made my decision. After Rook suggested the M&P which i had never shot before it set me back a few steps. Come to find out I had a few buddies that had the XD in .45 and the M & P in .40. And another buddy who had the Glock 21 Sf. After a shooting all three i settled on the XD. I really liked the Sigs, but i never even found one that came close to the price mentioned above. Thanks again everyone! Now to start saving for a 1911!

Awesome! Glad you got your gun, you will be really happy with the XD. Best of luck picking out a 1911 that is like trying to decide which wire to cut on a bomb. emoDance

I got real lucky with that auction and a deal like that will probably never happen again. It is one of the original West German made Sig's with the rolled slide.

The only thing I dread at my age is when I die, my wife will most likely give away my whole collection to a stupid relative including my NFA items.

Note to Bill.....put Ol Buzz....(gun lover) in your will to take good care of your guns. emoLaugh Save yourself the grief..from stupid relative getting them. emoAngel

We can help you prevent that from heppening! emoAngel

Really though, I own a Glock 20(10mm) and a Glock 23(.40) and the 23 has had 500+ rounds through her and she's never skipped a beat. What is so bad about these plactic guns?
