50hp lower unit?

once you get the lower unit unbolted there is a shaft at rear of unit how do you get it free?

That should be your shift rod, fwd and rev., under the power head you should see a small pin, remove the pin and the rod should be free.., You need to make a note of the measurement on this rod from the top of the lower unit to the hole if you plan on removing the rod,, it will screw in and out to make it longer or shorter,,That adjust when the lower unit will go into fwd and rev..

If OMC (johnson or evinrude) it will have a screw under the carbs. If a mercury it will just pull down unless it is a very late mode that is made by Yamaha for mercury then it will have a turn buckle close to the lower.

So it depends on who made it and what year model.
