I got an itch to get out this afternoon, and did not want to mess with the boat traffic so I decided to drag the flat bottom to Mud Creek. I had heard of a strong topwater bite down there so I tied on Zoom horny toad and a Yum dinger and started fishing the scattered grass mats there at the ramp working my way toward the mouth. Had two good fish get off of the horny toad and then landed two good ones. Went down to the little creek by Belefonte Island caught two more on the toad. Went back to mud creek and fished from the mouth back toward the boat ramp with the dinger. I think I caught 12 keepers and 2 shorts, biggest fish was probably just under 4lbs. Most of the fish were just mean 2.5-3lbs. It was awsome watching the fish come up and drill the dinger as I twiched it just under the surface. The Grass is getting ready to top out but is just barely under the surface in the places I was getting fish. It was a beautiful day and ever bit worth the drive. I tried to take a pic of one of the better fish but its tough when your by yourself.

hey churly, ain't that the fun-iest way of fishing??? just to watch'um blowup on the baits are such fun..... glad you had a good time..emoGeezer

Thanks for the report churly.. i might try to ride out that ways Sunday and give it a fighting chance.

Were your hits super aggressive, or more of a suck down?

The hits were super aggressive! You didn't even have to set the hook, just hold on to keep the rod from leaving the ole hands. Several of the frog fish absolutely left the water trying to get that frog. I wanted to fish farther down river on the main river grass lines but I decided to put in at Mud Creek to maximize fishing time. I did not get there till after lunch, 3 trailers at the ramp and i saw maybe 4 boats all day. I had the place to myself! I might have to move down there one day! I am looking very forward to the CFF event there!

Sounds like an awesome afternoon. I get lost on Guntersville when the grass begins to come up, but i have decided that all that is going to change this summer. I feel really comfortable there in the March-April time frame, just not in the summer. I guess what I'd like to know is what kind of set up to your use when you are fishing toads/frogs? I have a plethra of 6'6" medium to med-heavy baitcasting rods, and I'd love to adapt one of them to a frog rod. Any help would be more than appreciated.

Looking forward to meeting you at CFF Guntersville.

First of all, understand I dont own alot of expensive rods. I have broke a tone of them, and I am not rich. My solution has been to start buying BPS GS series rods($19 on sale). You can get any thing from Ultralight to 7'6" heavy sticks. For the frogs in the grass, I like to use a 7'6" MH GS rod, and a Diawa PT 33SH. You can cast a long way with the rod and you have the backbone to horse fish out of the grass. The reel has a 7:1 gear ratio, which is super fast! Its good for picking up line real quick. I had 14lb mono on yesterday, which is russian roulette and I payed a couple of times for it! Usually you need to throw 50lb spiderwire, the lightest would be 25lb. Berkley Big Game. Those fish are mean and the big ones can bust heavy line when they surge.

I can be a clutz on my boat, and have broke several rods. I'm with you on not being a rich man by any stretch of the imagination... Its all about for me what I'm confident in! I'd almost rather throw a Shimano Callisto ($39) Reel than any other. I appreciate the information and help.
