I have a 2007 Optimax 75hp. It runs great but I have a question. I have the smartguage and have noticed the engine always heats up great. 132 or thereabouts in about 5 minites or so. I always let it warm up until it reaches this temp before leaving the ramp. In just a few seconds after I reach full throttle, the temp drops quickly and usually stays in the 80 to 95 degree range, even in hot or cold water. When I reach a spot and idle a short distance the temp goes back to 132 degrees. Is this normal for these engines? My question comes from the comments about never going to WOT until your engine heats up to operating temp. If it drops back quickly to 80-90 degrees, is this causing engine damage? Thanks for any replies.

What you are seeing is normal operation of the thermostat(s), IMO. You are very wise to be mindful that the engine is coming up to temp and displaying a strong discharge stream. Keeping up with recommended maintenance is always a good thing as well. Good luck!

Thank you for the reply sir. I have talked to a couple of others and they are in agreement with you. I installed a new water pump last spring and it pee's like a cow on a flat rock which means water flow is good. The lowering of engine temp is due to increased pressure while running WOT and 132 at idle is good for this engine. Now. Back to chasing crappies..... emoAngler
