My 12 year old grandson Robert harvested his best buck to date Saturday, Nov 24th at 813AM. Rather it can be summed up better by saying "Grandson done went and got Papaw a taxidermy bill!" It is worth its weight in gold to have shared the experience with him. I got concerned for it appeared to be a tossup who would fall out of the tree first when we unhooked our safety vests to climb down. What a grand, exciting time!
We were sitting there scanning the woods for movement when a deer came over the hill to our northwest with his nose about a foot off the ground moving at a fast pace all stiff legged on a mission. Everything indicated BUCK in its posture and movement then I notoced the rack. The deer was moving getting closer and closer with the rack growing bigger and bigger with every step. By now Robert had his 308 shouldered and the deer would quickly be about 40 yards in front of the stand traveling from our left to right. I'm thinking the deer needs to stop for the shot and to be honest, I was at this point about to bust with excitement. All of a sudden Robert easies up to stand and lets out a loud but short "BURRRRP!" and the deer freezes in his tracks. Silence had filled the woods then it was interrupted with the ole familiar "BOOM!"
The buck jumped all humped over trying to escape except the shot placement was absolutely perfect, just behind the front shoulder through the heart. The animal hit the ground after a struggling 20 yards or so with forward motion hitting the ground with the right hind leg kicking a bit with Robert just daring the deer to try to get up as he kept the animal in the crosshairs. The deer became still. Robert turns around and looks at me smiling the says "How was that?" Then the giggling, high fives, hugs, etc began and lasted while we replayed the experience over again. It just does not get any better than that fight there!
The deer weighed in at 165 lbs. The main beams are almost 23". The inside spread is 19.25". The brow tines are right at 4.75", the G2's are 11.5" and the G3's are 9.25".
Now I need some help posting the pics. If someone will be so kind to let me email them to you that can post them I will forever be greatful.
Also, if anyone ever has the oppertunity to take a youngster out hunting, fishing or just out in great outdoors there is no better experience in this world. What great and lasting memories!
Thanks for letting me share this wonderful adventure!
