Man things have changed since we went out on Saturday. I couldn't even get a hit on topwater on Saturday and the topwater popper would be a key bait for me today. We got on the water today about 5:00 pm and I had a feeling today would be the day to catch the big one. The conditions were perfect, it had rained all day today and there was no sun hardly to be found so it should be a great topwater bite day. Well we went to a slough near the nuclear plant and we had a pretty dry spell for about an hour and a half and then the fish started to feed on the shad. We went to some super shallow water, less then a foot of water where I was catching them and we get a few bites on a buzz bait and I decided to throw a topwater popper out. Well I missed a pretty good size keeper fish, I would say around 2 1/2 lbs. He came up and killed the popper but he would not take it under. Well about 20' from where I got the last hit on the popper I was in the process on slowly popping the popper back to the boat while I was looking for some schooling bass. All of the sudden I feel my line get tight and I hear a good slurp..I thought man I have got a pretty good fish on, maybe about 2 1/2 lbs again. Boy was I wrong, the bait was no more then 15' from the boat when the bass hit and as soon as she felt the pressure from the reel she came to the top emoEek She had to be at least 6lbs if not more emoEek Then she takes off to the other side of the boat and I am in the process of letting line out and trying to keep my line from breaking and guess what I hear...snap :( When she jumped she had the whole lure in her mouth so much that I could not see any of the bait so I am not sure if the line was cut by her teeth or the line was just bad. It had just been about 15 cast before that I retied the lure since I had changed baits and I had just been fishing open water so I am not sure what really happened but all I know is I am sick to my stomach..that was the biggest fish I had seen on the lake in a long time..I caught one that went 4 lbs 4 oz this summer and it was no where near the size of the one I had today. So I guess you could say the topwater bite is starting

I learned the hard way to re-tie often and back off the drag with topwaters, particularly with spooks. However, since I started using braid, that has not been a problem. In fact, you don't even have to set the hook with braid...just start cranking.

I hate it when that happens! Next time maybe she won't be so lucky! JC1
