Most of you know this, but here is an example.

After not using our pontoon boat for several weeks, we had company and decided to use it. So I started the engine and of course checked to see if water was squirting out the back. It was not. The boat was not in a situation where I could see the back of the engine, so I raised it and turned it to the side. There was a perfectly round spot of clay on the back. A sharp tool easily broke through it. When I started the engine again the water passed through as it should.

One insect could have cost me a lot of money if I had not checked for the stream of water.

When I use to work at the marine shop, we would see motors come in fairly often where a bug or dauber had clogged the pee hole. Alot of water pumps and cracked heads because of it.

I don't see why not, except in my case it is not easy to get to, and I can go for years without the problem.

I don't know of a engine that even if the pee hole is stopped up, that it will not do any damage as it is simply a VISUAL sign that it is pumping water. On some engines it is used kinda as a bleeder (OMC X-Flow V-4/V-6). I have had to drill and install pee hoses on the early 70's OMC (L/3/V-4/V-6 X-flows) engines because they did not have them and the basic block designs and water pumps are the same as the newer ones using them as a bleeder and they did not overheat without them. So it being stopped up is just like it not being there. The pee tube being stopped up will not cause the pressure to increase enough to do any damage as the poppet is there to control water pressure by lifting off the seat and dumping a large amount of water to control water pressure. This action can be seen on most water pressure gages at WOT by the small amout of fluctuation in the needle. The engines not using poppets also don't use thermostats so there no restiction in the system and the pee tube being stopped up will only increase water pressure by 2-3 PSI as I have tested this on the inline 4/6 Mercury. Just my .02

I was thinking the intake being clogged up and no water coming out of the pee hole. Its been a while since i worked on a motor and my memory is not the best anymore. Thanks for clerifying that up wrenchin. I don't want to give any misinformation. emoThumbsup emoThumbsup

No problem. emoToast emoToast Thank you for not taking it the wrong way.

I see a lot of no water out of the pee hole from water pump failures. I have one here now that the block got so hot it crack in several places!!!

Perhaps I was not in any trouble after all, but it is still nice to know that the water pump is working. I would not to run any engine for very long without a visual sign that the water pump was working.

I don't know very much about mechanical issues, which is one reason I enjoy Fishing Forum.
