My new to me 522dvx ranger came with a 5 blade. Yes I said 5 blade prop. It was made for the great lakes. I am running a 225 merc opitmax. What prop would ya'll recommend?

Depends on what your looking for, two good all around props are a Tempest or a Trophy but I hear good things about the Turbo props too. I've heard mixed reviews on the Fury, some love it and some hate it. Performance Propellers is who I always use, they have seen about every boat and motor set up out there and can steer you in the right direction.

I second Performance Propeller as they would probably know right off the bat exactly which prop your boat needs. I have been dealing with them for years and couldn't ask for better service. emoToast emoToast

Do NOT put a Trophy on that heavy Ranger. It will snap the ears off a Trophy. I cant tell ya what prop to put on a Ranger but I KNOW it isnt a Trophy.

Really? My buddy had had a trophy on his 520 going on 7 years now with no problems...

I have owned 4 Trophys and have slung the ears off of three of them and cracked the ear on the other one. If you have a jackplate and the blades on a Trophy surface at top speed you are going to break them. The Fury is a great prop on a couple of Tritons I have seen. If I were you I would try some different props before I bought them.

You said the key word. Sufacing. Trophy props are not made to surface. There are not many props that can handle surfacing much less surfacing on a heavy hull. I have a lot of customers running Trophys on heavy boats and they have not had any problems but they are not surfacing them. Even the chopper that is made to surface still have ears to break off. The unloading and loading of the blades is pretty violent. Here is a video of Wes surfacing a chopper. At 2:10 you can see 1/2 of the prop is out of the water. This is what causes the ears to crack, break, and sling them. Just my .02 on the subject.

I know surfacing any prop causes the blades to flex. They also flex when running in rough water. I just know I will NEVER put a Trophy on my boat. They do make a good door prop. I use mine to prop the garage door open. I would look at a Turbo TXP. They have a lifetime warranty against blades breaking.
