I worked midnights Sun night & then hunted Mon morn. Slept in the woods a little off & on. I was laid back takin a nap about 2:30pm when I heard the leaves rustling quite a bit. I raised my head up & this buck was about 30 yards in front of me traveling from my right to my left. He was in a fast walk & kept droppin his nose to the ground. I whistled & he stopped & I fired & he dropped. 3pt probably about 90 lbs or so. I need 1 more to fill the freezer up & then I guess I'll be trophy huntin, not sure I have the discipline to do that, but I'm gonna try.

Good meat buck, just don't show or tell Churly. emoZipped He hates to kill those young ones, but they sure taste better. emoHungry Jmax

everyone talking about filling the freezer, have you folks ever tried canning venison,if not you have no idea what you are missing ,canning it takes the wild taste out and youve never ate any better beef, give it a try,i have canned 20 quarts of cubes and 21 quarts of ground venison so far this year, and you dont have to worry about freezer burn.and yes i have some in the freezer too,all my back strap goes to the freezer

I am proud of myself that I let a spike that looked very similar to that one pass by saturday. I didnt see horns at first, just deer, and had the saftey off when it came into full view. Lucky lil thing I say. HAHA

they all eat good, I found that lots of people in the south are not accustommed to aging their venison. Do you realize that the beef steaks that you buy at publix have been hanging in a cooler for sometimes as long as 10 days, before being cut. This allows the enzymes to break down (tenderness) ans the excess blood to drain out of the vessels (gamie taste). This is mainly because our climate is so warm and we cant hang the deer in the barn like they do up north. I like to let my quarters sit in a cooler on top of bags of ice for at least 3 days. You have to make sure that the water is drained off and you have to maintain a temp between 35-40 degrees while it "ages" try it!

As for Jmax comments, yes I am a devout QDMr, and I havent shot a buck under 2.5 years old in 10 years or better. What people have to realize is that we now have ample opportunity to harvest does. Harvesting does rather than bucks, in most cases, premotes better heard health and sex dynamics that will directly affect the health of every animal in the heard. You also increase the number of mature bucks in the heard which in time will lead to a better distribution of quality genetics throughout the heard. At my lease, if your hungry or just wanna watch one die, shoot a doe, if you shoot a buck make sure its one you want to mount. We do not have a points restriction or minimum score to be a shooter, just needs to be that hunters idea of a "wall hanger" since a few of my friends have never mounted a deer I thought this rule would allow them to take a deer of their choice while protecting the majority of my young bucks.

The other aspect of the QDM philosphy that people have to adopt; is that, you dont have to pull the trigger to have a successful hunt. This is the first year in the last 17 that I have gone this far into the season without pulling the trigger, that being said, I have had many successful hunts this year and had many small bucks well within range! Practicing QDM takes a lot of patience and sometimes a change in strategy. Congrats on letting the spike walk spur! Thats what it takes.

KDXDUDE, congrats on your kill! I wont ever cuss someone for shooting a small buck unless its on my land or its Jmax! LOL! Happy hunting fellas! There's my QDM rant for '11......

Thanks. Got my annual 4 deer(2 bucks & 2 does) & freezer is full. Trophy only for me now. Gonna be hard to roll out from under them warm covers with a freezer full & it being trophy only. Like u said though, ya don't have to kill for it to be a successful hunt. Been seeing a beautiful fox squirrel & I am gonna carry a camera & try n get some pics of him, colored like a groundhog on back & down outside of legs & he is solid black on his belly & inside of legs. Hopefully I'll get some good pics to post on here. Thanks again & best of luck to ya!

every deer is in some way a trophy, i love venison and have killed many deer over the years,i took my 14 year old son with me on opening morning of muzzleloader season and he sit in a climber from 6 in the morning untill 11.30 a.m. i was well pleased he stayed on stand that long ,we never seen anything that morning and when i walked him out of the woods i went straight back to my stand and stayed untill dark without seeing a deer,i went back sunday morning but my son didnt get to go ,at around 8.30 a.m a nice seven pointer came in and i dropped him in his tracks.i hated it in a way because it was about 10 yards from my sons stand, i have had 4 spikes and a three pointer under my stand since then but let them all walk.i have skinned, canned ,frozen andcooked up five deer other than the seven pointer,i have a buddy that has taken several does and two large bucks since i killed that one so ive no need just to kill a deer.if i cant use the meat he brings clean and quarter the deer and then i start handing it out to who ever is in need or wants to add soome venison to there freezer.as all on here do i love to hunt but dont have to kill to enjoy the woods.i enjoy reading the posts on here.good luck in the field and on the water and be safe, theres more to this hunting story but i will save it for later its kind of embarrasing to tell lol.
