I agree with the petition minner and I signed it. One question I have is why is the petition on a major tree hugger web site.

Good question. In reality most petitions are started by tree huggers, except this one.

The main reason for it though, is that other petition host sites require to much personal information from signers (eg: name, home addreess, telephone, email etc.) AND require you to be a "member" before signing a petition. IMO this is scares away to many potential signers.
