I've never owned a foot-controlled trolling motor until this week. I mentioned to a guy at work that I was going to mount it this weekend and he said "Remember to mount it on the left side." Is there a particular reason for this, or is he full of it?

That brings up a good question. Why are trolling motors on the left side? I guess you could mount it whereever you wanted, but every trolling motor I have ever seen was on the left side.

i always close my eyes so i cant see where im going anyway but it would hurt if it came loose from the right side and hit you in the head while running up the river (ouch)

The release on my Riptide to stow is on the right side toward you. If it were mounted on port side then that release would be awkard to get to since I use my toe to operate it.

Liveliner, are you an old Navy man? I thought that I was the only one that used "port and starboard". I was aircrew on the U.S.S. Dwight D. Eisenhower from '80 - '84.

Well, Some good points were brought up, and thinking on it, I usually lay my rods on the port, so I'm mounting it on the starboard.

It could be that it doesn't obstruct as much of your straight ahead view when driving the boat.

MB you win! Good answer although on LL's and my boat that would not be a factor.
Oh and I wouldn't want to leave out whisler11, it wouldn't matter on his either.

I never gave it a thought why it is mounted on which side.

Liveliner, thanks for clearing up which is port and which is starboard, it has been so long since I was in the Navy I forgot which was which. I was the hook runner on the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt back in the early 60s.

Actually my boat came from the factory with a platform made on the left side. Standard for Grizzly trackers, I guess. There is no deck area up high at the edge on the right side. That is a good question though??
