Ammo Shelf Life

I have a box of .12 ga shells and a box of.22 shells,I can't remember when they were bought butthey are OLD. What is the shelf life of ammo? The inside flap on the .12 ga has a matrix config marking like they might be from 1983.

Only thing that I'd worry about is corrosion. If the ammo has been kept in a dry space and there is no corrosion on the brass it should perform normally.

I have some old old ammo for my 16ga. It is the paper shells and they will fire I have shot some from a open box just to see. But as long as they have been kept dry your good.

gathered up all the old ammo in my dads stuff after he passed a few years ago.....amazing how old some of it was....shotgun shells , punkinballs in paper shells etc ....some had to be 50 years old. 2 walmart bags full sat in my garage for 2 years while I tried to figure out where to get rid of it. I was afraid to walk by it!. Finally decided the safest place for it was...well I can` t really say but one foggy morning it disappeared.
