Both my son and I had things to do early yesterday morning but decided to go out for the afternoon. We didn't get to our hunting spot until about 1230. Shortly after we arrived, we had a distant Tom gobbling and responding to our calls. We set up with decoys in place and continued to call, but the bird hung up about 60 to 70 yards out and we couldn't see him. Eventually, he got further and further away. We relocated to near the area where he had hung up on us and we were able to get him gobbling again. This time he was probably 300 yards or so away. We called to him again and got an answer from him and also from another one about 200 yards to our right across a clear cut. Another call and the one to our right was now about 100 yards away. We quickly set up in the thick stuff near the clear cut. I wanted to put a decoy out from us into the clear cut but my son asked me to call first just to be sure it was safe. I did and this time he was gobbling less than 50 yards away! No time for a decoy. After a few more calls and waiting for him to strut back and forth a few times, he finally came right at us and my jarhead son dropped him at 25 yards. I was really surprised how fast that bird closed the 200 yard gap on us. It was 1:15pm when he shot him. The bird was a mature gobbler with 1" spurs, 10in beard, and weighed right at 20 pounds.
Nice job Chris! emoToast
