I bought a bass boat last winter with an XP 150 Evinrude. I had a compression test done prior to buying, and it was good. I thought I was safe and good to go. I had a mechanic check it out for me, and told me it had bad gas, to run it out and it would be fine. The first time I took it out, I filled with Seafoam to clean the carbs and carbon. The boat took forever to plane off, would spit and sputter and die when trying to idle, and ran like crap.
I have seen many posts here about James Perry and the work he does, along with the reputation he has on this site. Let me say, it is well earned and deserved.
I took my boat to James on a Sunday, and he told me numerous things that could be wrong with my motor. I told him I had the compression checked and it was fine. He mentioned doing a leak down test, something I have never heard of. Long story short, my motor was shot. The cylinders were out of round, the rings stuck, etc...
James gave me an estimate to fix the boat. I paid for the parts, then after he was finished, he told me he came in under budget by $300+. Now, I would have had no idea if he did or didn't come in under budget. I was prepared to pay the original estimate, so the several hundred that I saved was a great surprise. Point is, he didn't have to tell me and I would have never known the difference. Honesty is a rare trait in this day and time.
He was covered up when I left my boat, but got me out a lot quicker then I imagined.
Fast forward to today, when I go to get my boat. I called James on the way, and he said my motor had gremlins, that he went to crank it before I got there to ensure the battery was charged, and it was sputtering and shaking badly. One of my power packs went out. It just so happened that he had one in storage and ran and got it and put it on my boat. Problem solved, and no charge.
We took it to the lake, and it ran a million times better. It jumped up out of the hole, idled, and ran like a motor should. The wind was blowing 700 miles an hour, but we ran it for about 20 minutes.
I'm looking forward to getting my initial 2 hour break in done, and then the next 8 hour break in finished. James is going to meet me at the lake and fine tune it again after the break in is completed.
We talked about the prop on the boat, and how he could get different ones to try on my boat to see if it changed performance.
I live in N GA, and it's a drive to get to James' house, but I won't take my boat anywhere else. I even tried to talk him into servicing my Monterey I/O ski boat.
Thanks again James, I really appreciate the work, and look forward to seeing what this thing will do once it's broken in and fine tuned.
If you need your boat worked on, James is hands down the man!
