A local boat dealer quoted me a price of $150.00 to change out the WP on my 95 Mercury 90 motor which I think is a total rip-off. Any for sure tips I need to know before I tackle this job? I've been told it has to be in gear before dropping the lower unit, is this true?

Know anyone who is reasonable in price on doing the work? I need this done so I can fish the USA Bassin TX trail this year.

Thanks for any help in this matter.

If your good at fixing cars etc prob no big deal, If you dont have a repair book get one ! If You dont get it right your motor will be toast
I did mine on my erude 150 was easy .. but a bear to get the shifter hooked back up.

The part is prob close to 1/3 to 1/2 of the cost the rest labor . Thats prob about average charge to do it .. you might find someone for 125

Average labor is around 85 an hour now. Might be a tad high but not too bad.

I changed one a few years back on a Merc 60 The shifter was a pain but its not too bad.

It's hard to believe what people charge to change out a simple water pump impeller these days. It takes about 20 mins at best to change it out and the water pump impeller shouldn't cost over $20.

The part is $25.00 and change and the gasket is $2.00 and change. Island Cove wants $125.00 + tax which I still think is a rip-off. I guess Ashtray's dad and I will try to do it ourselves.

Ha! Well I'd just tell Island Cove that its good to want things. Unreal!

Its easy Bill...you'll be able to handle it.

As already stated Get the Book! It will have the tips and tricks. Consider getting a kit with new shaft seals instead of just the impeller.

While you're back there get the grease gun out.

every one has the right thoughts ! but its no big deal , put the motor in forward , loosen the 5 or 6 bolts that hold the lower unit on , drop it out , one thing you need to be real carefull is to look at the way the old pump is rotating and put the new one in the same way with the new key and seals , i use a little lite oil or wd40 sprayed on the impeller, makes it a little easier , rotate the shaft in the same direction as the old impeller until it seats back down and titen the 3 bolts firm but not to tite !reinstall and make sure the water tube is lined up right (slides inside the upper tube). you may need to rotate the prop a little to get the splines to line up and bolt it back up ....you done...

The deed is done. It took around five hours because we had the shifting backwards when we took it to the river to test the first time but we got it right the second time. I've had the boat seven years and this is the first impeller installed in the motor. It still looked to be in good shape but since we had the motor apart, we changed it out.
