Absolutely NO idea if you can use them in tourney's. Yes my cousin and a number of my friends have them in Minnesota. At first we got them so we could see what we were fishing as far as structure, weedlines, etc... while ice fishing. If you are standing (and yes, driving) on 36 inches of ice and you cut a 16 in hole in it, the camera works phenomonally well and is a favorite with the kids and anyone who hasn't ever had the opportunity to see one in action.
We later "figured out" like it was an epiphany - that we could use them in the summer. It really helped us better mark our GPS spots and also see what was down there. My 10 and 12 yr old boys would rather you catch the fish and they watch the screen to see them bite! But my Dad gets "all fired up" when he saw us pull it out on a deep point to see where they were hangin'. He thought it to be an unfair advantage. I think they rock. But you can wind up carrying a battery and cables. It's always a pain to have one more battery and more "stuff" that you have to have all the pieces to. If you can spring for it and are curious to see what you are fishing. Go for it. Though I must say, I have fished here for 6 mos without one and haven't even missed having one in the boat. But it would be good to find some great deep water structure on that river...

Mine is a cheap one and works very well....clear water is the key....the least bit of turbidity really makes it harder to view things but I was very surprised the first time I lowered mine down. And if you are like me it might just pi$$ you off to see how many fish are down there that DON"T BITE!!

Oneshot that's a pretty good question I've never even wonderd about. I don't see why you could'nt use it but I don't know. I figure it's not gonna catch the fish that's all up to the folks in the boat, to me it's kinda like that new fish sound thing a ma ig that is suppose to imatate bait fish that alot of the pro's use

xroadsbasser is right about the water clarity. If there is much color in the water the visibility is very low. I have had fun with mine but I do have one of the cheaper ones and it's hard to see what's going on in full sunlight on the screen. If you know that there are fish in the exact area that you are putting the camera on it's fun. One time I could see that there was some fish layered all over just over the bottom of the area where I was and when I put the camera down there I could see that it was bluegills, hundreds of them. My camera looks like a bluegill and the fish would come up real close and take a real close look. I use it next to my dock to see what's down there too. It's not that great for moving from one place to another and the camera doesn't always point in the direction that you wish that it would. Still, it's fun and I learn something new whenever I take it with me on the boat and play with it.

great in clear water , but dont expect to just drop it over the side and see all kinds of fish. camera control is sometime difficult wind or boat waves and you will not be able to hold camera still, i do much better with one person holding the boat still, also throw a jacket over your head for the best view bright sun light will cause you not to see details. good luck with yours.

Just a thought ... would one of those computer shaded screen covers "not sure what there called " help reduce the glair on the screen ???
