Anyone ever use an automotive battery in their boat?

Why would you not use one?

I have a need for a low profile cranking battery.....needs to be 7" tall or less, and the
only batteries I can find are 8" or taller.

Automotive batteries are fine to use for the cranking battery but not for a trolling motor, you need the deep cycle batteries for a trolling motor because of the constant discharge and charging, most deep cycle batteries will take this constant charge/discharge but car batteries won't, it will warp the plates inside and ruin the batteries.

Doc,
It depends on the engine.

If it is a older inline with CD ignitions it clearly states not to use a maintenance-free battery. Alot of the engines will produce up to 18V ,because they only used a rectifier and not a regulator, and a sealed battery that is bad. It is stated not to use them on alot of mercury engines. It states to use only Marine batteries in all of the Mercury factory manual that I have looked at.

The factory OMC service manual that I have that is factory states and I quote, "all batteries should be of heavy duty, marine constructions. Maintenance-free (sealed type) batteries can be used with loop "v" models" This book covers 120 thru140, 185 thru 225, 250, 300 hp models. It covers V-4, V-6, and V-8 engine.

If you need marine batteries a friend of mine sales the octima batteries the red tops are 80.00 and the yellow and blue tops are 100.00 you can pm me or call them at 706-965-5003 ask for dirk or chuck. These batteries are over 200.00 dollars in the store.
