Ive got a 98, 150 EFI Merc. And 1 of the pistons has damage to the top. Also looks like some slight damage on cylender wall. What i was wondering; can this be rebuilt and the motor hold up if the damage isnt to bad? Or am I going to spend more on repairs than what its worth? Any help on this would be appriciated. THANKS

I repair engines like that often. The key is to determine the failure. Most of the time it is a injector issue or a switch box. I am building one next week that the switch box was double firing. I send the injectors off to be flow tested and I replace the switch boxes. TOOOOOO many times people will rebuild them and only to have them fail very shortly there after because they repair the failure and not the cause. . Very rarely do I see a failure that requires a sleeve. 99% of the time it only requires boring of the one cylinder. With a 2.5L, I replace all the pistons because of locator pin failures. Not a question of IF but WHEN are they going to come out.

Here is one that I am working on today that a hose came off and leaned out cylinder #3. As you see, it is very damaged and the block was distorted. This is one of those 1%. The problem was they only offered a .020 for a 150 but offered a .040 for a 200HP. So I had to weld the block and bore the block and install 2 .040 O.D. 200 hp sleeves in it because of distortion and port the other sleeves to match. So it is now a 200HP block.

So there is hope for it!!! It can be repaired and hold up just like a brand new engine.
