Welcome ACE44
I don't fish much when it's this cold but I do fish the Nick-A-Jack when I bass fish and I really think it has potential. Most of the time I launch at the Marion County Park boat ramp, they have a nice dock to tie up while you park your vehicle and there are generally enough people around that you do not have to worry about someone stealing your truck. Fishing that area is reasonably simple by beating the banks just about anywhere you want to try and also fishing the grass line on the mail river too when the grass is visible. Most of my bass fishing is done with floating worms or lizards, actually they sink to a foot or two when you work them as I use a swivel to reduce line twist. This seems to be a good choice when you are in the grass. I also like carolina rigging in the deeper spots or humps when you can locate one. I've caught lots of bass at the Nick but never anything over 4 lbs. I am sure that there are some much bigger ones in there but they haven't bothered my lures yet. Good luck fishing the Nick-A-Jack. The guys on this forum are more than willing to help with other ideas.

ace44 - the best pattern I've ever used on Nickajack in late-winter/early spring is a Suspending Shad Rap. Fish it in areas where you find remnants of last year's milfoil (aquatic weeds). Brendalene Slough, Bennett's Lake, Mullin's Cove, Nickajack Cave Slough, along the river channel, etc. Crank your Shad Rap down until it ticks the grass and then STOP! As noted in another thread, don't be afraid to let that Suspending Shad Rap just sit for 30 seconds at a time. Many times that is when your strike somes, while it's just sitting supended and you'll see your line twitch. Work Shad Rap across the weed beds slowly and with pauses... it's more like worm fishing than crankbait fishing. Don't crank constantly or Shad Rap will simply dig down into weeds and foul. That will still happen a lot anyway, especially at first until you practice and "get your stroke down." But once you perfect the pattern I guarantee you can become a bass-catching machine.
