Went out with Fishing Fire today about 7 and the lake was beautiful. A little thunder in the distance but the water was really calm. Sky was overcast. Water temp was 85.5. We began by fishing humps in the lake with Bombers in Tennessee Shad. Nothing. Switched over to Rattle Traps and counted them down. Nothing. Tried Rooster Tails in the shallows to no effect. Finally put on some chatterbaits (from Walmart in Brainerd, $5.74) and began to hook up on points and drops. The ONLY problem was the amount of strikes that were short. Didn't have a trailer hook on and must have missed a dozen good fish. Even had some tag the skirt and hang on but let go when they felt resistance. Ended up with about 4 keepers and 8 or 9 shorties. Weird thing is I didn't see a single fish jumping or chasing anything. With the water that calm you would have expected a little action on the top, maybe some wolf packs. Kind of disappointed because I just knew today would be THE day that we'd really do well. But hey, loved being on the lake and watching the sun peek through just as it went down. Can't beat that!
