BassERT, Lake Jackson, Canal C-54 Lake Washington Florida, Bass and Crappie, December thru January

I figgered it was time to share a little on fishing here so some folks will be up to date an my exploits emoLaugh

I have been fishing very little here because mostly of the wind emoBang

Blowing like stink and the lakes are flat and open so it makes it tough. Sometimes I can get to protected water (C-54) depending on the direction.

The canal is a fun place to fish because of the TIGHT launching area and the constant line of fishy places to work on.

Around the bridges I was catching large 13-14 in. crappie on BGs In the stained water down here they all look so black!

The bass were slow and slow to bed with the record warm temps that was happening when I got here, and still going on --- NO haters emoEnforce

I went with a good friend and guide to Lake Jackson 1 hour and 40 minutes away through the fog all the way emoDoh

He had netted about 30 wild golden shiners and I used purple smoke 5 3/8 stickos with 5/0 Trokar worm hooks with my bait caster rig 12 Flurocarbon.

We had about 13 bass averaged at 5-6 lbs when the wind picked up and I drove the TM into a weed bed to hold the boat in place.

Charlie had brought a spare rig with him and we decided to use up the shiners together. He didn't catch another fish as I threw the first one out and 15 seconds later I had a 6.5 coming to the boat/ And this continued steadily to the last of the shiners, and it was 11:30 AM so we went home with sore arms. We had caught 35-45 bass (we quit counting as the action picked up so fast and I didn't get pics because we had some representative of the fish we were catching and it seemed redundant and time-wasting. We just laughed a lot and Charlie had a ball watching me get excited by the slamming of very nice quality fish. He didn't have time as he was rigging me for the shiners all the time. One of the weird things was that the canal water flow control that drains to Lake Kissimmee was stuck open with weeds. The water was about 3 feet deep and the weeds kept me from being able to run and we had to clear the motor pisser with a wire about 3 times. FWC agent Tina told us they had a crane crew working on clearing it to it's normal 5 to 6 foot level.

I had been fishing one of my fav spots which is on the marl washboard road to the Stick Marsh the Canal C-54.

I took Susan a week ago last Sunday and we had our first skunk in two years. We still had a beautiful day and the Nature show we were in was going strong, so we didn't have hurt feelings over it. But she wanted to try again. I tried to change her mind because the State was spraying heavily and the bite was off, but we went any way. We caught a few bass and they were in the 3 average with a 4 1/2, but the fun was when she caught a nice'un on her 4lb crappie rig. emoWorthy

I have had only small fish in my closest to home Lake Washington ten minutes down the road, but I decided last week to try my old "milk run" from last year where my average fish was 3lb the whole time I was here. 2 hours of fishing where once were weeds, but now were bare sticks and occassional pencil grass, sawgrass, Kissimmee grass and the surviving hyacinth was frustrating so I hit my marks and just threw through the few remnants of the weed I saw last year. Finally I get my first fish-5lbs.

I wind drifted to the next large sparse patch of maidencane and a 4 1/2. Than a 4 and back to over 4 again for the next 3 fish. I felt great finally about Lake W and then I got a couple little males at 2 and less and called it a day to get my haircut.

It will be a fun season this year and when I got some news I will inflict it with another report.

I have pics of fish and the canal in no particular order coming up.

To all my friends and CFFers there I miss you guys; stay warm and stay safe on the water

Thanks for reading

RE: BassERT, Lake Jackson, Canal C-54 Lake Washington Florida, Bass and Crappie, December thru Janu

Has Lake Jackson got any 10 or 11 Lb bass in it? I know it went dry a few years back and I wondered if it had rebounded? I know it had a sink hole out in the middle and that was where the water all drained. When we went down there we caught some as big as 11 1/2 lbs.
Nice fish keep up the good reports

Fun stuff Pat. Sure looks "fishey" there. I hate you are missing this weather, was below 0 at Dunlap last night and about 7 at our house. I am starting to get stir crazy staying in the house. Enjoy the winter in Fla. and see you in the summer.

Regards, Norman

Enjoyed the fishing reports and pictures. The weather is crazy up here. Single digits up this way however, supposed to be 50* to 60* this coming weekend. Go figure.

Talk to you when you get back to Tennessee.

RE: BassERT, Lake Jackson, Canal C-54 Lake Washington Florida, Bass and Crappie, December thru Janu

When do the crappie spawn down that way Pat?

Re: BassERT, Lake Jackson, Canal C-54 Lake Washington Florida, Bass and Crappie, December thru Janu

Mikie: FWC is setting up Jackson (Osceola Co.) as a catch and release trophy lake. A friend who works in FWC has been assigned the project and they have a beautiful launch area with a bathroom and easy access from Canoe Creek Rd out of St. Cloud.
He sends pics of him and others fishing big ole monster type worms with 15 lbers although the last pics were 12 lbers emoBang
I have caught so many 7-9 lb fish and Susan had one around 11 there. I did mention they were fixing the water gate there and hopefully will be up next time I go. What a sweet little lake though! emoThumbsup

Gene: The spawn (usually around Dec to Feb-March) has been slow this year, until the water started to get below 70* then it got good, but lately they have disappeared from my regular spots that I fish. Guys are having to travel upriver (south) from Lake Washington to Lake sawgrass and further to Lake Hellen Blazes to fish 4 foot vegetation for them. A lot of people from here fish the airboat ramp and other deeper holes along the weir (underwater dam)

Sounds like you need to get your windsurfing gear back out, Pat!

Re: BassERT, Lake Jackson, Canal C-54 Lake Washington Florida, Bass and Crappie, December thru Janu

I see that you are loving the trashy green fishing. emoPoke The dark water down there makes all the fish look black doesn't it? Biggest crappie that I have ever personally laid eyes on came from Orange lake back in the early 70's when we used to go down in February. It was a toad. Over 3 lbs. I didn't catch it, but my wife's uncle did. emoBigsmile emoGeezer

We are all loving the single digit temps and having to break ice at the ramps in order to launch our boats. At least that is what they said. emoBigsmile I haven't been out of my driveway for 3 or 4 days. But the sun will take care of the remnant ice and snow today. Heat wave this weekend. Crappie better look out. emoBigsmile emoGeezer

Re: BassERT, Lake Jackson, Canal C-54 Lake Washington Florida, Bass and Crappie, December thru Janu

Good report. Did you see any Gators???????????

Re: BassERT, Lake Jackson, Canal C-54 Lake Washington Florida, Bass and Crappie, December thru Janu

Gators are hiding right now
I fish some heavily-infested waters and Susan even remarked that we heard gators, but haven't seen any...weird

That WILL change soon (mating etc...) emoRolleyes

I didn't know this winter would be so rough there up north, so don't think I am gloating. I am grateful.
We are finishing ( I hope emoEek ) 2 days of rain and temps in the 60s. S'posed to be back in low 80s tomorrow and Sunday tho
